Fediverse vs Disinformation

395 readers
186 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

What's True

Vance was indeed given the name James Donald Bowman at birth, after his biological father …

What's False

… but, officially, he has only changed his name twice, not three times. The first name change was the result of his adoption by his stepfather. The second name change was one he requested as he was about to graduate from Yale Law School, a year before he got married.

Nice of his peers to refer to him by his chosen name instead of his birth name without any grief though! I wonder if there's a lesson in here somewhere... 🤔

Yeah: it's that white cis male privilege will be enforced at all costs.

I don't have it in me to deadname him.

I also don't have it in me to speak towards his defense if anyone else deadnames him.

This points out one of the evilest parts of the Republican party and that is the fact that their political opinions have nothing to do with their actual beliefs and are only a way for them to hurt other people. At the end of the day they don't care if someone changes their name or what bathroom they use, but talking about these things in relation to transgender issues is a way for them to cause pain to others which is the only point to anything for Republicans.

People that say things like "I'm not a conservative but I'm voting for Trump/Bush/Romney" are really saying they're only voting for the fascist parts and don't really care about the fiscal policy as long as they get to cause undeserved pain to someone. And remember, if it's not undeserved pain then they're not into it. It's must be undeserved or at the very last disproportionately cruel.

All name changes seem perfectly reasonable to me. Couch copulation, not so much.

Leave the Sofa King alone!

There are so many reasons to hate JD Vance, but changing his name to match the name of the person who raised him is not one of them.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This has nothing to do with hating him, just pointing out his hypocrisy when it comes to someone choosing their own name.

That's more than fair, and I should have thought of that!

He changed what he is publicly known as at least 3 times, only 2 were officially recorded. Seems like it is important to him to be referred to by his chosen name, nothing wrong with that.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 11 points 2 months ago

Right, but he opposes LGBTQ+ people being able to choose their own names.

Smells like another Kid Rock. Brought up rich and trying to pretend you are from poor country folk to get votes or in Rock’s case sell albums.

[–] 2pt_perversion@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't care about the name changes, he's the same asshole no matter which name he goes by.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 6 points 2 months ago

His choosing of his own name while wanting to deny the same right to others is hypocritical and part of his being an asshole.

JD Vance is the modern equivalent of Sarah Palin screwing over John McCain's chances at winning.

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

What do you mean modern? That was only four years ago. Right?

[–] TheAristocrat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

In all fairness, the GI bill covered all his tuition.

[–] SoylentBlake@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I feel like the GI Bill should only cover tuition at state schools. Idk why. Otherwise just gives me the ick.

I don't like government giving money to private institutions or companies when theres a public option, ESPECIALLY when the private parties receiving that money are the same people who bemoan about government being "the problem", deregulation/needs to be dismantled, etc.

Ifyou look back thru history, ALL aristocracy, Mr. TheAristocrat, is heavily comingled in government - for everything. They just want all the government money for themselves. Duplicitous motherfuckers. That's the kind of person that'll trip you if a bear starts chasing the two of you.
