This is a map of how many times the Olympics games have been, or will be held in each country of the world.

Personally I would like to see Iceland tackle the challenge of infrastructure, I'm sure they would find elegant and minimalist solutions for each sport, without compromising their beautiful nature. It would be interesting to see athletes adapt to permanent daylight in summer. And cynically, it would expose the atrocious state of their housing market, and maybe prompt some change ?

In places that already have the necessary infrastructure in place or that can actually afford to lose billions, and that are actually in a location where outdoor sports aren't literally suicide (looking at you, Qatar World Cup). That's the only way for the Olympics to not be a massive burden on the host city.

Honestly, I wouldn't wish interactions with the IOC (or for that matter other international corruption organizations like FIFA) on my worst enemies.

Honestly as a Brisbaner I haven’t got any problems with the IOC from the perspective of how it today treats the host cities. It has other problems, but not really host city problems any more.

Our own governments, though. Jesus fuck they’re stuffing themselves and the public around. Our federal and state governments and local council can’t figure out what they want to do, where to host the major events, etc. It’s an absolute fucking farce. And it’s entirely based on domestic politics.

I guess the corruption of the IOC is just business as usual seen from the eyes of Russia or whatever. I don't wish the corruption on countries I like, and I don't want the countries I dislike to have the propaganda victory.

That said, Pyongyang Olympics would be interesting.

~~Just for clarification, the map is slightly wrong (or mislabelled) as it takes into account future events (e.g. LA 2028, SLC 2034, French Alps 2030, Milano 2026 and Brisbane 2032)~~

Clarified, thanks OP!

That's on me, I badly described the map, Wikipedia's description is better:

Nations that have hosted or will host the Olympics

I think an Aotearoa (NZ) + Pacific Islands would be really cool. Have the main city be auckland but with events in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and New Caledonia.

Relying on sponsorship money to improve infrastructure and try to minimise new buildings.

Also random other ideas:

  • Rwanda + Tanzania + Kenya
  • Vienna + Bratislava + Prague (they are all within a couple hours by train).

(As you can see I’m a fan of the idea of having a couple countries close host it to minimise costs and pollution, while only building/improving infrastructure if it will be used).

Also I’d be suprised if big powers like India, Indonesia, and Turkey don’t end up hosting one in the next century.

Thanks for posting! Curious about the downvotes

People just saw this without reading the post and thought the map was implying people wanted to host future olympics in France and the US, and not that France and the US had hosted the most olympics.

People downvote for the most trivial things on lemmy, and it gets kind of annoying, which is why I’ve disabled them.

I didn't think about this reading but now that you mention it i see how people would be mislead!
