“Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out,” Tyler said. “He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept 10. The vice president will be there one way or the other to take the opportunity to speak to a prime time national audience.”

Tyler said the Harris team would be “happy to discuss further debates after the one both campaigns have already agreed to.”

“Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anyplace should have no problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th,” Tyler added.

I really like how they're calling out his weird, old man games at every turn.

Seriously.

Stop bending over for the opposition. Democrats for the past 25 years kept compromising while Republicans got what they want and then moved the line.

Compromising for 25 years? Someone doesn't remember Clinton, the original compromiser. Or Reagan Democrats.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

They compromise because Dems need all three of presidency, house of representatives, and Senate to pass anything. They've had that for, drumroll please, 4 of the last 24 years. That's 2 years under Obama and 2 years under Biden. Or if you want to go back further, 6 of the last 44 fucking years. And you wonder why they are forced to compromise?

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 8 points 2 months ago

Agreed. This is the right response.

I hope they use an empty lectern and focus at it every time Kamala mentions Trump.

[–] mozz@mbin.grits.dev 39 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Naw. Use a cardboard cutout, and have recorded statements of his that then she can play according to a little prearranged sounding board. Play some of his greatest hits, like grab ‘em by the pussy. Play back some of his Biden debate answers and go into depth as to why they are false. Play a little montage of things he was saying about how COVID’s not that big a deal.

You can set it up a HELL of a lot better than just her giving a speech and focusing on an empty lectern. You can still have an exchange between the two of them without needing him to be there. And then, have her finish it up by saying hey Donald there was a lot of stuff I didn’t get to. We’re gonna do this again in two weeks; if you want to be here we can do a debate, and if not, no biggie, I’ll just pick up where I left off. Let us know and all the best.

Oh, and then at the very end play back him saying any time, any place, and just sort of shrug and look around confused, like you’re searching for him somewhere on the debate stage. And then say all right then, see you in two weeks I guess, maybe, and then wave to the crowd and say all of y’all have a good night.

A British politician once failed to show up for a panel show and they replaced him with a literal tub of lard. For the whole thirty minutes.

It seems fitting for Trump.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

I hope they place a chicken in a bad toupee at the otherwise empty lectern.

[–] InternetUser2012@lemmy.today 7 points 2 months ago

Put a bag of cheeto's there, and have her refer to him as 34 time convicted felon. Don't say his name, he's not worth it.

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 62 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Maybe Old Man Trump forgot he agreed to this specific debate with Harris? He's weird, but give him the benefit of the doubt (until he doesn't show up).

[–] Rob@lemmy.world 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

You mean the senile senior, Dementia Don? 34 times convicted felon and racist rapist?

[–] barsquid@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

We cannot be certain it is age-related dementia. It might be from syphilis or drug abuse. He is indeed too old for this job, regardless.

[–] remotedev@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He goes by many names, and pronouns

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

He goes by many names, and pronouns

Weird is one now.

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

DonOLD needs a reminder - that's weird.

[–] bradinutah@thelemmy.club 5 points 2 months ago

Well, everyone is saying it! Poor Sleepy duhnOLD can't say the Vice President's first name correctly despite having known about her for many many years. Even now he has trouble! Not just sad. Weird!

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 51 points 2 months ago

Something about petards and vertical displacement comes to mind

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 47 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I hope he tries to make a last minute appearance and gets turned away.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 58 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Because they do a civics test and they won't let him in.

Edit- that was supposed to say covid test, but if the ignorance fits...

[–] barsquid@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

We would've dodged Donald and Ronald if presidents had to pass a civics test or dementia screening.

[–] quicklime@lemm.ee 12 points 2 months ago

"Where would we be without this great country of ours?" -- Ronald Reagan

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago (2 children)

No, if he shows up at the last minute, and complies with the pre-negotiated terms, they should let him in. If he shows up at the last minute and complains about he fact-checkers or the moderators or the lack of couches, to try to renegotiate things at the last minute, they should just tell him to pound sand.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Then he'll say that Crooked Kamala & the Fake News Media™ (great band name, btw) wouldn't let him in the debate because they were scared to debate him!

His base would eat that shit up, not realizing that he's basically trying to bring a bowling ball to a basketball game, taking his ball & going home, then complaining that no one will let him play.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Right, that's when you just ignore his tantrum and go on and have the debate without him. His base is not gonna listen to reason, no matter what. Harris's goal should be to persuade the people who are not down the rabbit hole to show up.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

You know that's exactly how it'd be

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 45 points 2 months ago (4 children)
[–] nonailsleft@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'll keep repeating it: send Baldwin on and have Harris fake shoot him

[–] Draegur@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And make sure it REALLY IS a "cold gun" this time.

Even then, after the Rust incident, I don't imagine Baldwin is in much of a mood to participate as a trump standee in the first place, let alone in a skit that might give him PTSD flashbacks.

Flip-flopping weirdo “Lyin’ Don” the bombastic orange makeup wearing racist rapist, lied again

[–] linearchaos@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She should just take all the crazy stupid s*** he's been saying on the campaign trail and debate against it.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That would be great. If Trump doesn't come she can just take his turn for him, "What former President Trump, who was to scared to be here, has stated on the issue..."

[–] SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Or just use canned video of him talking, complete with date/time/location stamp and a QR code to the full video so nobody accuses them of taking things out of context.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Yes. They can then string segments of different videos together for the debate so Trump stays on topic for the first time ever.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 months ago (3 children)

And Fox will give Trump equal amount during the same time slot, thus completely defeating the entire purpose of a debate.

I think there needs to he three televised debates between presidential candidates, by law. Two for VP. All on PBS, C-SPAN, Twitch, YouTube and whichever network decides to participate.

More information, by law, or you don't get to play.

It doesn't matter if he gets equal time on fox. The people that will watch that are going to anyway, and the people that won't, won't. He doesn't have anything new to say and no one is wondering what his policies are. The only people that matter are the ones who are on the fence with Harris. And more serious people will watch her on almost anything other than fox. Let him go on fox and reeeeee into that sycophant echo chamber all he wants.

Saw somewhere that fat orange wants to debate her at fox news. heh

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Compromise: Host the debate on Fox, but have the lady that confronted him with his own words at the National Association of Black Journalists event be the moderator.
