Blaze has been great for growing Lemmy communities through contribution to communities like

!fedigrow@lemm.ee
!newcommunities@lemmy.world and
!communitypromo@lemmy.ca

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Go to the website for your instance, there should be a create community button at the top

Other tips:

After creating the community, set a title and add a basic description to the sidebar. In your case, you could include a link to Wikipedia or something about the artist. You can also add rules specific to your community.

It's up to you if you add a banner and icon, but I've found that an icon can help the community be recognizable.

Finally add a post or two that help people see what kind of content you had in mind, and promote it on !newcommunities@lemmy.world, !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and other similar places.

Then day to day you should continue posting content until the community gets rolling on its own, or hold regular discussion threads (ex. New albums and announcements)

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Fragmentation exists and depends on how many users are interested to discuss a topic.

Of course tech communities are thriving, they are the common denominators for most of the users on Lemmy.

On the other hand, if we had !football@lemmy.world , and people also posting to !soccer@lemmy.world, splitting the tiny community there is, wouldn't you want everyone to just go to one place to keep it alive, rather than have 50% of low activity on either side?

That's why I'm still posting to some LW communities even though I'm not a fan of having communities there.

There are only so many people interested to talk about active communities, so I create the weekly post to discuss about active communities on !newcommunities@lemmy.world , because it's more important to get visibility for communities than to avoid this community being on lemmy.world.

I could have it on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca too, but that would mean asking everyone to comment twice, and realistically that's not going to happen.

Being able to move away from a community thanks to federation does not mean every community should be duplicated, that's counterproductive.

[–] tamlyn@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

You could ask for communities on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca

It's a bit of a combinations of !newcommunities@lemmy.world and find a !findacommunity@lemmy.ml

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

!communitypromo@lemmy.ca is also intended for this purpose. You can promote any community or instance at any point, as long as you don't promote it too often :)

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Feel free to promote your community in !communitypromo@lemmy.ca as well :)

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 weeks ago

!communitypromo@lemmy.ca is one place. Other servers may have similar.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

A more general thought/suggestion:

Have a general support community that people can post in, and pin a post from it on the instance so people know where to post with requests and ideas. You could also include a link to the communities page or some other list of all communities that are available. It could help with discoverability

Also feel free to cross post to !communitypromo@lemmy.ca

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yes exactly :) Most clients should support it like that. When in doubt, just use the exclamation point

Additional info:

Some apps will also autocomplete while typing it in, which makes it easier for people on other platforms (ex. Mastodon) to be able to use the link.

For example, here are two versions of the link (with the formatting in this format so you know what to type)

Plain typed link: !communityPromo@lemmy.ca

[!communityPromo@lemmy.ca](/c/communityPromo@lemmy.ca)

Auto completed link: !communitypromo@lemmy.ca [!communitypromo@lemmy.ca](https://lemmy.ca/c/communitypromo)

So if you have the option to use auto complete, it might be a bit better. Often I just do the first one

Great to hear!

Some of the communities are quiet, but you'll find that people engage with your posts when you make them. Especially if there are a good number of subscribers for them

You can also post on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca or !newcommunities@lemmy.world if you're reviving one, so that others can see

Finally, if you're in contact with the mods on Reddit for a particular team, see if they'd be interested in having the Lemmy community be the official off-site space for the subreddit. People that want to talk about the team without ads/tracking/annoying UI can come here for it

Hello,

As everybody knows, content discovery on Lemmy can sometimes be a bit tricky.

To help smaller communities to get more activity, I launch this thread for people to promote the communities they are active one.

One important criteria: please only promote communities that have been at least one post in the last 7 days. And if there is none, feel free to post there and then promote it here!

This could be a weekly thread, but let's see how it goes

Finally, !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca are communities that you can subscribe to to see updates about communities

2

Perhaps after some amount of time having announced themselves over in !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca, or...I don't know if there are communities for instances (the fediverse communities, presumably?), but likewise for them?

The combination of a promotional space and discussion for helping grow communities/instances could help ensure there's always some activity keeping this community visible to those seeking help.

Stay subscribed to these to learn about more communities passively

🌐 Instances to look through

You can find communities from specific instances

A great way to find lesser known communities is to look at the /communities page on an instance. Different instances may have different themes or focuses, and so you can find related communities that way.

For example: https://lemmy.ca/communities

  • pangora.social: Great way to find instances related to a particular topic. This is also great for picking an instance when first making an account/moving accounts.
  • awesome-lemmy-instances

There are a lot of different apps / frontends that can show stuff from Lemmy, and they vary in how well they support different link formats. Here is a short explainer:

Each entry below shows you what you should type (like this) and what you will see as a result (after the dash '-').

For each entry, some apps will support it and others will not. It can be helpful to include a few different link formats so that everyone can use the link easily.

NOTE: There is a bug on the Lemmy website right now. If you start typing a community or username, it will try to autocomplete it. DO NOT click that autocomplete, or it will mess up the link.

[!community@example.com](/c/community@example.com) - !community@example.com

  • This is the universal format. If you click this link, the community will open in your home instance.
  • This is the recommended method.
  • If you are coming from Reddit, it is similar to how you could type /r/askReddit

[you can put whatever here](/c/community@example.com) - you can put whatever here

  • This is another way to make a universal link. If you click this link, the community will open in your home instance.
  • This works well if you can't use the method above. For example, if you want to stick a link in a shields.io badge, you can use this technique to still include a universal link.

example.com/c/community - https://example.com/c/community

  • This is a hardcoded link. This is what you can copy and paste from the browser. If you click this link, the community will open on a specific instance. Anyone using a different instance (ex. anything except lemmy.ca in this case) will not be able to subscribe right away, and they will need to redirect it first.
  • Sometimes you can't use the methods above. For example, if you want to create a nice thumbnail while promoting your community on !communityPromo@lemmy.ca, you will need to use this URL.
  • If you use this method, try to use the other methods as well so people have options.

https://lemmyverse.link/c/community@example.com

  • You can also use this external tool to automatically redirect users. Once the user clicks on the link, they will be redirected to the instance that they set. This can be great for new users that click on the link, who may not understand what is happening or how the instances work.
  • This also works for posts, but I will write up a separate post for those

I'm noticing an influx of Reddit users today, maybe revolving around their weird bug they had today. I know this question pops up semi regularly, but for those just getting their foot in the door maybe we can help show them what else is out here on the Fediverse to help them get started.

I'll kick us off, to any newcomers, I help run the following communities, and we'd welcome you to any of them. (Shameless self promotion I know, but I hope more people join in sharing theirs as well)

For help and support, taken right from the sidebar of AskLemmy here

An important one to kick off, we do have an entire community just for this over at !communitypromo@lemmy.ca (https://lemmy.ca/c/communitypromo) for a more long-running conversation

For new users, I hope you find some communities that you enjoy! For current users, share your favorite communities that new folks may be interested in! (Please use both the !@_ notation and give a link, to help our new fediverse people out in learning how it works)

Welcome to Lemmy! If this is your first experience in the Fediverse, then welcome to that too!

Don't worry about understanding everything right away. We all took time to get it, and many of us are still learning. You'll know enough to start using Lemmy very quickly, and you can fill in the rest as you go.

This is a brand-new community, so we're still adding resources for you. Go ahead and say hi or ask your questions, either as a comment or in a new post.

See the pinned post on !communityPromo@lemmy.ca for a guide to finding new communities.

So you signed up on one of many Lemmy instances, and now you want to start joining communities you are interested in.

There are a few ways to do so...

Using the Communities page:

The most obvious one... Communities link at the top of the page.
Once you are on the Communities page, you will see 3 tabs:

  • Subscribed - obvious enough
  • Local - communities that are made on your instance
  • All - a bit misleading because these are not actually all communities, but rather all communities that have been fetched by your instance so far.

Browsing the front page:

More specifically, browsing the front page with the filter set to All (Subscribed | Local | All)
If you are on a fairly popular instance, you will most likely run into posts from all kinds of new communities as other people from your instance fetch them.

Using the community browsers:

These websites index communities across all instances, and you can use them to search for remote communities.

In order to subscribe to or even see remote communities (communities hosted on other instances), they have to be fetched by your instance.

How to fetch them:

  • Copy the link to the community you want to fetch.
  • Go to the Communities page on your instance and set the filter to All.
  • Paste the link in the search field and click the Search button.
  • When the text saying "No results" under the Search button disappears, that means that the community has been successfully fetched by your instance (it can take a bit longer to fetch it, especially if the instance is overloaded).
  • That's it! Now you can delete the URL from the search field and find the community by its name.

Browsing the communities that promote new communities:

There are a few different communities that you can use to find new and interesting ones.
Some of them:

Browsing Kbin magazines (communities):

Process of subscribing to Kbin magazines is the same as subscribing to remote Lemmy communities.
If you go to https://kbin.social/magazines (or any other kbin instance and add /magazines at the end), you can browse and search for magazines.
To subscribe to one of them, follow the "How to fetch them" instruction from above.
