Thanks for subscribing to /c/workreform@lemmy.world ! Now that we've grown (and are growing) so quickly, I've had some calls to discuss what this community is for!

What we stand for

As the sidebar says, Work Reform aims to increase the share of rewards reaped by the workers (as opposed to capitalists - be it shareholders or owners), and make work more equitable. We do NOT aim to abolish labor altogether - I personally don’t think that’s a viable societal system. There is no known system in human history where majority of the population can subsist without doing anything in return.

What we need to do

I see a few things necessary to reform the current economic system - let’s call it Awareness, Advocacy and Action:

  • Awareness means getting people to realise that the corporate propaganda they’re hearing isn’t the whole truth.
  • Advocacy means going out and telling people to join the cause, form a local union, etc.
  • Action means taking organized action - writing to politicians, organising dialogues and strikes, etc.

What this space can be used for

In short, all of the above!

  • To raise Awareness, you can post anything that talks about the issue of wage disparity. That means venting about scummy practices, that means posting news that counters corporate propaganda, and that means posting memes and screenshots of relevant tweets.
  • To engage in Advocacy, you can post news about organised action taking place elsewhere that we can celebrate or contribute to.
  • To take Action, you can start a local chapter of your union, organize/engage in online campaigns, etc. This space can be used to help gather people for that purpose.

I personally think the most important thing now is to get more people to rally behind the cause (which means Action and Advocacy). But some of you have really good ideas on taking Action. So feel free to use this space for that purpose.

As it grows, we can discuss how best to use this community as well, so the rules may evolve over time.

Also, not in the headline, but-

The fact that he did it back in the 90s when you could actually successfully open a small business and make money from it as if it's relevant today?

The business is a franchise called Raising Caine's Chicken, which I've never had, but if you go by Yelp reviews, it's either the best restaurant that has ever existed or pretty mediocre.

Also, Wikipedia says very little about his early life, but apparently his parents could afford to send him to a private catholic school, so he didn't exactly grow up improverished.

India: Police detain 600 striking Samsung workers at protest

Thousands of employees of the South Korean company have been on strike since September 9. They are demanding better wages, 8-hour working days, and union recognition.

Indian police on Tuesday detained around 600 employees of Samsung Electronics, one of the world's largest semiconductor and computer chip manufacturers, and union members for organizing a street protest.

For the past four weeks, thousands of employees of the South Korean company in India have been on strike over their working conditions near the factory in Chennai and at other locations.

According to senior state police official Charles Sam Rajadurai, the protesters were detained because their march was causing public inconvenience.

Canadian National Railway said on Friday that labor union Unifor has filed a notice of dispute to the Canadian Minister of Labor, just three days after initiating negotiations.

Also known as "conciliation", the notice of dispute can be sent by either party to the Canadian Minister of Labor during a negotiation and typically results in the appointment of a conciliation officer to assist the parties in reaching an agreement.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- For Kenyetta Gentry, the Oakland A's are a part of her family's DNA.

"My grandfather was security here in the 80s - that I know of. If not, even longer. And my auntie, Auntie Pat, she worked here as security as well," Gentry said.

A tradition in which Gentry has participated.

For the past 24 years, she's worked for Aramark, the company that runs the shops and concession stands at the Coliseum for home games.

After all those years of service, Gentry says she was shocked to find out Monday that Aramark will not be offering any severance to their employees following the A's last game on Thursday.

In addition, Gentry says she and her coworkers will also lose their health insurance.

“League of Legends” is caught in the middle of a dispute between Hollywood’s actors union and an audio company that provides voiceover services for the blockbuster online multiplayer game.

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists called a strike against “League of Legends” on Tuesday, arguing that Formosa Interactive attempted to get around the ongoing video game strike by hiring non-union actors to work on an unrelated title.
