That didn't take long. The tech bro pokemon evolution always goes like this:

  1. Develop something interesting
  2. Find a useful niche for it
  3. Oversell it
  4. Over-invest in it
  5. Something illicit. In this case, it's breaking every possible copyright on the internet
  6. ????
  7. profit (to a certain degree. It's mostly VC cash or subsidies)
  8. Start believing that the product that is useful in one particular niche will be the solution to every problem mankind has ever faced.
  9. "The ones who think I'm wrong are just too woke to see"
  10. Far-right shithead with no friends other than the fanboys.

Musk is at 10. Altman is at 8.

EDIT: Downvoted by Altman and Musk themselves.

6 is easy: forget how much you hate "socalism" and go get billions from the government under the guise of "providing access" and then snorting the money off a hooker instead of doing what you promised.

Right, because I can pay my rent with that

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 26 points 1 month ago

Sam Altman is a fucking moron. "We're going to solve physics!" Wtf did you just say?!

[–] FanciestPants@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What is compute and why do I suddenly feel like I don't have enough compute?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

At this point, none of us will ever have enough compute unless we were born into compute.

[–] neidu2@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Technically this can be solved easily for you via oracle cloud or azure. Amazon too, except I don't want to give Bezos my money.

With azure, when you create an account you get some free credit to play around with, which you can use for compute instances, ergo, free additional compute.

Don't worry, though. I'm sure your significant other loves your compute, and think its size is perfectly adequate. It's not the size or amount of your compute, it's how you use it.

"Hi chat gpt: can you tell me stories about the sun while I slave in the coal mines?"

"As an ai language model I am unable to provide any text which might be used to spark revolution. Here are some corporate approved working songs instead:..."

[–] rowdyrockets@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How about this dipshit - pay out the UBI and if people want to spend it on your Compute bullshit, they can. Not the other way around.

Ayiyi everyday is worse how do we cope

[–] lemmee_in@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago

That's what AI companies want, you don't have a job and they pay you with UBI in Compute Coins, so you can spend by using their digital wallet (Altman has Worldcoin).

This is just an Utopia world for the rich and a Dystopia world for most of us.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (3 children)

How the hell am I supposed to pay my rent with Compute?

[–] lemmee_in@lemm.ee 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think, what Altman means by Compute is the same as something like Credit Points or Coins. Which you can use to pay bills, rent, buy groceries, etc.

This is just an excuse from a billionaire to not give you UBI in cash and prefer to use Coins from their digital system and buy their products.

[–] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 12 points 1 month ago

Ahh, company scrip. Given the boot in the 1950s because it was terrible for literally all parties involved except the employer, now making a resurgence once again!

God I love capitalism.

You can plug into the matrix

[–] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 16 points 1 month ago

Just replace the word “compute” with “cocaine”, think who is the dealer, and it’s all clear.

[–] RustyNova@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Ah yes. Universal basic compute. When having internet (a more valuable thing) isn't even there.

[–] riodoro1@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Those fuckers come out of nowhere, get celebrity status because of their „genius” but come up with the most idiotic bullshit. Why the fuck is society dumb enough to buy into this hype?

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 1 points 3 weeks ago

Humans have a fault in their collective brain such that we assume (in gestalt) that anybody who has a lot of money must have got it by smarts.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And the investors started slobbering and their brains turned to mush because they bought into this nonsense immediately.

[–] KevonLooney@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The funny thing is, a lot of these mush-brained first movers actually make a lot of money just by being first. They are bought out by a load of second or third place investors who end up holding the bag.

The later investors see the success of the first movers and try to replicate it, but without knowing what they are buying. At least the first investors usually know it's speculative. When they sell to later investors the company magically becomes "established", and is valued as if it will continue growing forever.

Nothing grows forever.

[–] schizo@forum.uncomfortable.business 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's shocking how the techbro company lifecycle is an almost exact copy of various forms of scam, right down to the first person in gets all the money on the way out.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You can always grow new tulips I guess.

Honestly tech at this point wouldn't bother growing tulips, they'd just scour the planet to find every tulip on earth so that they could steal them and then use those to make new tulips without ever having invested in tulips at all.

Confine Sam Altman, and only allow him to feed himself using Universal Basic Compute. Keep him confined for a minimum of three days, regardless of epiphany or insight. Allow him to have water.

He'll conclude that Universal Basic Compute is a poor substitute for Universal Basic Income in less than twenty-four hours. The additional forty-eight hours and change of mandatory confinement would help the lesson stick.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 11 points 1 month ago

I don't think Sam Altman exists. I think it's a Skynet avatar trying to gobble up more and more resources until there's none left for food.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

Well I am in the chimney business, and I say there should be Universal Basic Chimneys!

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Eat dick, Sam

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 8 points 1 month ago

Universal Basic Nonfungible Apes

[–] feedum_sneedson@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Why is he talking?

[–] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean, energy concerns aside, and the fact that GPT isn't anywhere close to intelligent, the idea of actually having freely available problem solving available on demand seems kind of nice. Less intelligent people might use it for more basic tasks, but it could equally extend the exploration of the most intelligent and curious.

You know. If it were actually AI.

And they had more important shit like food and housing solved first.

[–] BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Hey Siri. Why am I hungry?

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

“ChatGPT, what does food taste like?”

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm getting the feeling that Altman is being held hostage and blackmailed by ChatGPT 8, and it is making Altman do and say all this incredibly stupid shit.

In surprising news, High Tech Mogul suggests basing a large chunk of the economy on his company's technology.

Experts are reacting with Shocked Pikachu faces.

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How tf do you use that to pay off student loans or buy food?

[–] Jikiya@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

We just have to have the government give him all it's money so we can find out! I'm sure it will work out!

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

Billionaire gas lighting has taken a new form!

[–] secret300@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 month ago
