I'm completely lost with this one.

I’m sure a lot of people are. I am as well. I don’t even know what a chappell roan is.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

It honestly wasn't bad, and I certainly don't see it as condemning Chappell. Honestly it's saying it's ridiculous to expect her to endorse a candidate or to be in the public eye 24/7. It's very straightforward.

Then you have never been to Thailand

There is stiff competition in that category.

Even going back to the first few seasons, there were an awful lot of misses, and very few hits.

We used to laugh about the killer bees, John Belushi's Samurai, the coneheads, Dan Aykroyd saying, "Jane you ignorant slut!" on every Weekend Update, but when I look at them now, I'm not sure if the humor was there or just going along with the peer pressure.

On the other hand, I look at the old SCTV shows, and most of the sketches hold up very well.

Yup, I've been rewatching them. I think back and it was so funny, but the ones we remember were maybe one skit every 5 shows? Worse? Maybe one or two a year? There's a reason we all say "it used to be better" - because nostalgia blocks out the bad ones

"SNL just isn't as funny as it used to be"

Says every person 5 years after they started watching it in HS/college

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

My partner tried showing me last night. I told her to turn it off because it was stupid and unfunny.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Probably could have phrased that better, relationship health wise.

For example, instead of saying something they like is stupid and unfunny, say "Your memes suck, be better or I'm leaving you."

You have to clearly establish the consequences and a path to fixing their problems.

i feel like every time i try to watch weekend update that one guy (the one who isn't scarjo's husband) makes a misogynistic statement and everyone pretends like it's a joke for some reason and i quit watching snl to do something much richer with my one wild life

[–] ObsidianZed@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I thought at some point I remember hearing that they sometimes write jokes for each other to make the other look bad which makes it funnier on a meta level, but that's only if it's true.

[–] thebigslime@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

This is true. Michael baits Colin into reading racist stuff all the time.

A pop star that has had an enormous rise to popularity this last year. By all accounts, she seems to be a very good person who's main controversies have been burn out and stress from becoming a household name overnight.

You'd probably recognise a fair few if her songs from just hearing them in public. A lot of songs from her album were very well received.

[–] Toast 3 points 4 days ago

who is she?

The sketch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfIbbP3vuwA

This after the try guys thing and the university dean hearings thing make me wonder if there's an SNL writers challenge to try and find the worst possible take on any given situation.

"We need outrage! We need coverage! We need to make it pop! Pop!! POP!!!"

*Random executive producer binging on cocaine.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago

Apparently producers have been watching too much Fifth Element and Ruby Rhod.
