Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, on a visit to Taiwan Saturday said an isolationist policy isn’t “healthy” and called on the Republican Party to stand with her country’s allies, while still putting in good words for the party’s nominee, Donald Trump.

Haley, who ran against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, told reporters in the capital, Taipei, that supporting U.S. allies, including Ukraine and Israel, is vital, and she underscored the importance of Taiwan — which Beijing claims as its territory, to be brought under control by force if necessary.

“I don’t think the isolationist approach is healthy. I think America can never sit in a bubble and think that we won’t be affected,” she said.

Why is she "visiting Taiwan" as if she's some important diplomat? She is not currently... anything?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 54 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Because if you're a Republican, you can violate the Logan Act with impunity.

[–] Ullallulloo@civilloquy.com 9 points 2 weeks ago
  1. I don't think she thought she was negotiating anything.

  2. If John Sparkman, George McGovern, and John Kerry didn't get indicted for violating it, I think it's just unenforceable law for anyone.

[–] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 40 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

At one point, I actually respected Haley for running against Trump and calling out his constant crap. But she has zero spine. She's turned out to be just another maga supporter defending him at every turn.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 26 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Is that surprising to you? Anyone left in the Republican party cares more about money and power than principles or whatever else you think a politician is supposed to care about.

[–] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 8 points 2 weeks ago

Not surprised. Just sad to see that she actually turned out to be just like the others. Wouldn't have voted for her either way, but still.

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

whatever else you think a politician is supposed to care about.

Technically, that’s the republic. Currently it’s the unheard and unseen masses of staffers and wonks and bureaucrats who hold this mess together. The fancy poster boy people are just there to rally the common folk around a single figure.

She's fishing for a spot in his administration, even though his chances of winning are going down. She could have taken a stand and joined the never trumpers, but that would require patience she lacks because as long as he's alive trump owns the Republican party lock, stock and barrel. It will be interesting to see what happens to it when trump finally croaks.

My bet is on it fracturing. Cults of personality usually don't survive the death of their leader, and that's exactly what Trump's diehard supporters are - Flavor-Aid drinking cultists.

If she had taken a real stand against Trump, she may even have been considered for a spot in a Harris administration to add balance.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago

Right? I'd give Adam Kinsliger a spot somewhere. He's got a spine and he's not a fucking traitor.

She’s turned out to be just another maga supporter defending him at every turn.

She's a creature of the GOP donor class

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 38 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

How to endorse Harris without endorsing Harris…?

[–] vanontom@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I have as much faith in Nikki "doing the right thing" as I do Melania. They've bent the knee and kissed the ~~ring~~ mushroom micropenis, and made it very clear who they are. We should listen.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 25 points 2 weeks ago

Bet she chews Tylenol like tic-tacs from the constant whip-lash she's got flip flopin like this

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

She's auditioning for a cush lobbying/consulting job when Donny pops his top

[–] ravhall@discuss.online 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Because she makes headlines.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I can think of a simple fix for that.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Don't write stories about her

[–] eletes@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

She's 52, could easily set herself up for 2028

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

🤣 Republican mouthbreathers are never voting for a colored woman. She's a traitor and a piece of shit.

[–] eletes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

While I agree with you, the party has some hard reckoning coming up when Trumps gone. No one can fill his shoes. They're going to have to pivot somewhere

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (11 children)

The cognitive dissonance is real. How this silly twit can say "isolationism is bad" and "Trump good" in the same breath is truly astounding.

Trump worked toward isolationism like nobody in the last century and if he gets in again, Project 2025 puppetmasters will take that up by an order of magnitude as they create a new Sharia law environment and distance the rest of the world even further.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Trump isn't isolationist, he just endorses a different distribution of geopolitical allies than Biden and the Democrats.

Stop fighting Russia, start fighting China.

I wonder how much she got for her spine?

[–] Arsinoe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Can't sell something you never had.

[–] StrandedInTimeFall@lemm.ee 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Oh, shut up, Nimarata "Nikki" Randhawa Haley. You don't give two shits about America being isolationist or not. You only want Taiwan to stay independent because of its tech. If it was just any other island nation in the Pacific, you'd let China take it and not bat an eye.

You back a party that would turn on you and JD Vance's wife, given a chance. They don't care about you. They like white, seemingly Christian men. They would sooner suck Trump's dick then shake the hand of Indian woman like yourself.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago

Nikki is her middle name, not a nickname. The quotes are unnecessary.

[–] asyncopation@lemm.ee 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

This is just sad. It's like a victim of dv who quickly corrects themselves when they say something their abuser doesn't like.

[–] DMBFFF@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

She might be half right.

[–] SassyRamen@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well that's... that's just weird

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

It's Cold War politics.

My enemy of my enemy must be my friend. So be a team player and get with the program.

[–] FiniteBanjo@lemmy.today 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No no! Its fine! He still allows trade and immigration from all over the world, it's just that it can only be people he personally allows. /sarcasm

And his daughter's textile business.

And all of his own merchandise.

[–] raynethackery@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Just let him go. I know the withdrawal symptoms can suck but it's better on the other side.

[–] finickydesert@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago

But trump wants us isolated.....

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Haley trying the Lindsey Graham approach to making her convictions as solid as water and just saying whatever is expedient for the moment.

... And oh look at that, both from SC.

Both Susan Rice and Samantha Power make her foreign policy experience look like a joke.

[–] PyroNeurosis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

It's a threat. In the same way it's bad for your knees to not play ball with the mob.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

"anti-trump republican, what a joke"
