Regardless of your geographic location, religion, heritage, party affiliation, or your firmness on historical texts; what is it that you believe government's role to be - or should be?

If you'd like to elaborate, what is it you think your local or national government gets right and gets wrong?

I pose the question because I believe this fundamental belief is through which we observe and react to politics. There are things we want or don't want government to do but often legislation or special interests or geographic or political threats get in the way. Our reactions to politics are often, but not wrongly, short-sighted and emotional without context or wisdom. I don't see much dialog around this topic and I wonder if people subscribe to political parties without really considering if the party aligns with what they genuinely believe government's responsibility is or should be.

Greetings fellow lemmings! I have a problem and i was hoping your smart brains could help me solve it. I want to use an arduino and some addressable LED strips as an „ambilight“ upgrade for my pc. I soldered everything according to some instructions on the webz. I also provide enough electricity for the strips via a 12v charger. When I power them on (no matter if the arduino is turned on or not), they just blink randomly. Only a few led on the 4 strips I connected (to make corners for my monitor). The data input from pin 5 on my arduino is completely ignored when it is turned on. So I think it’s a wiring problem. But I don’t see the issue. On the picture you see the input connections i soldered. The strips are just connected together by wires. Ground to ground, data to data, power to power. Is my dumb smooth brain keeping me from my plans, or is there something broken? I only have replacement led strips, but I don’t know why the arduino or the power supply should be broken

update for everyone who cares: A friend of mine and me were troubleshooting (he has a multimeter and another arduino), and we came to the conclusion that I need an even stronger power supply. The leds on the new strips are much more powerhungry than the old ones. So I’ll try to get a more reasonable power supply (we did the math and I need one with 5V and 20 Amps, the current one is 12V with 1.4 Amps) and I will post another update.

Thank you so much for your help, everyone!

Howdy, so while I'm able to block all posts from hexbear.net accounts, it seems there's no way for me to block all their comments on instances they're federated with. I'd rather not leave some of the communities that are still federated with them, but I would like to be able to block or hide all of their comments in the threads.

Is there any way to do this yet? Or do I just need to move to an instance that's defederated from them?

Please help. I tried chatgpt, google, duckduckgo, I can't find it. The background tune is definitely reminding me of some trance track from the 2000's era and I can't figure it out.

...or am I crazy?

I keep seeing videos lately of grown men posing as children online and baiting individuals to public spaces and either assaulting them or recording/exposing them for content. While I don't mind the idea of a predator being outed, the idea of grown adults posing as children online seems unsavory to me. Especially if their end goal isn't to protect children, and is to provide content for views.

Obviously, being a child predator is wildly immoral and illegal and their actions are not what's being debated.

Taking example of Signal, I need to save each and every image manually to be me available outside its sandbox. Why is it like that rather than making it easy for me to use things that have been explicitly sent to me?

I have used another messaging app called Twin Me which also does something similar.

I always used WhatsApp earlier that allowed me access to the media downloaded in chats and let me take local backups but unfortunately they now allow only Google backups!

Yes, I do have a full-time job, and I even enjoy it, but it doesn't pay enough to survive in this hellscape of a world we live in. I lack the college degree required to get almost any decent-paying job (plus my last job hunt took MONTHS to get a lead), I don't have the skills or originality to become an online content creator, nor the artistry or patience to create and sell trinkets on Etsy (plus, that would require an initial investment which I simply do not have). Should I set up a GoFundMe? OnlyFans? I wouldn't really be offering anything except a charity basket/collection plate so that feels dishonest at best. Idk, I'm quite literally having a breakdown because I'm probably going to lose my car soon, and then my job, and then my apartment, and then my life. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you

When is a papaya ready to eat?

It's the "star" variety, will it turn entirely yellow?

Just a wonder on how you'd spend it. I'd probably buy up some land and build a nice village or town kind of similar to Poundbury. I'd probably sell houses at a fair price but only to people who send in a CV and seem to be upstanding people who actually want to work and be a part of a community, as well as giving them a mortgage Then I'd have a nice mansion and pretend to be a Lord where I can look over my wonderful tenants and maybe buy them Christmas gifts and send them birthday cards. Help them out if they need it.

Basically what some Lords did centuries ago but probably more kinder. Oh, and the place will be built with nice old timey architecture as well. Probably cobble streets because screw cars lmao. I just want to give people a nice life I guess as well as LARP as nobility

Do you guys ever use the Internet Archive for anything? I agree that they're doing a great job archiving things, but realistically, through time most of things which happened have been forgotten.

I use the Wikipedia like once a week to look something up, but I only ever used the Internet Archive to look at a early version of my own website. But never for anything else. But perhaps I'm missing out on something?

Not like "I went to school with one" but have had an actual friendship?

I've had a couple of conversations recently where people have confidently said things about the Black community that are ridiculously incorrect. The kind of shit where you can tell they grew up in a very white community and learned about Black history as a college freshman.

Disclaimer: I am white, but I grew up in a Black neighborhood. I was one of 3 white kids in my elementary school lol, including my brother.

Hi All! I have an old Delll E6440, which started acting weird 1 month ago. After any kind of swiching it off (includes shutdown, hibernation, sleep), randomly i can't wake it up (this can happen even on restart), when i press the power button these can happen:

  • the power LED on, and that's all. Nothing happens, the HDD, or battery charging LED does nothing, the screen is off, i can't turn it off, even if i press the power button for 10 seconds, i can only turn off by removing the battery
  • power led on, some blinking of hdd led, but then same as above
  • power led on, hdd led blinking, dell logo comes up on screen, hangs there, others are same as above
  • starts correctly, and i can use, but its very slow, like if the CPU is running at low frequency, also on linux mint (main os) this time the battery indicator is missing, like if it would be a desktop pc, the system not even detects the battery, or charging, even if it runs from battery only. After a half hour, the cooler revs up, the system gets faster, like normally, and the battery/charging indicator appears
  • starts correctly, everything is normal, and stable

So a usually turn on, is like this: fail, take out battery and back, fail, battery out-in, fail, battery..., starts correctly. But for example today i had to to the battery cycle 8 times until it started.

I've checked the cmos battery, its fine with voltage a little bit above the nominal, and never was UEFI settings loss. I've tried without the HDD(SSD) too, nothing changed.

I've tried to start without battery, on charger, but no any reaction on power button, not even the LED. The charger supplies the normal voltage, also tried with other charger for same type, but nothing changed. If the laptop starts correctly, also charges the battery as normal.

Do anyone have some hints, why is this happening? I've done longer RAM tests too, no error.

Example: I stopped because I grew attached to an anime called Zombie Land Saga (2018) and am currently trying to forget about it now.

I posted about it on Reddit, then on here because I didn’t agree with the writing of the overall show.

I won’t bicker about it anymore though.

(Example at the end)

Usually we discuss stereotypes in terms of how they are harmful—which is good because it’s super important to recognize and confront the stereotypes that perpetuate systems of oppression and hurt. That doesn’t mean all of them are harmful, though. Some are neutral and and some are a net positive. If you can think of neutral ones that’s fine but I’m especially interested in the constructive and beneficial ones. Hopefully I’m explaining this well enough but if it becomes clear I didn’t I’ll delete this post.

Example: I usually encourage people, especially kids and pedestrians, to assume that drivers can’t see you. While it’s not necessarily true even a majority of the time, it’s nevertheless a constructive stereotype to hold in terms of road safety.
