Dwarves venerate, not worship their ancestors. And elves named their weapons too, probably more often than men

men: We learned it by watching you!

Olcrist the Goblin-cleaver and Glamdring the Foe-hammer!

I wish I was a Hobbit.

Be the change you want to see, my dude.

Where are we starting the commune at? I'm down for this. Return to Shire.

[–] Quacksalber@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And dwarves don't love gold?

[–] pleb_maximus@feddit.de 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And Elves don't love jewelry or name weapons?
Hobbits with no class structure?

[–] WarlockLawyer@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It appears to be a ideal commune without class structure when you are only showing the heirs of the most powerful class leaders with the only working class hobbit being subservient to the richest.

Only recently I've been made aware that most people who haven't read the books don't know especially Merry and Pippin are actually pretty big shots.

[–] Thavron@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah isn't Merry like heir to a fairly big chunk of the Shire?

[–] flughoernchen 4 points 1 month ago

Everything east of the Brandywine if I'm not mistaken. Though technically Buckland is not part of the Shire at the time of the lotr events.

The Hobbits absolutely do have a class system

Those no-good Sackville-Baggins... always stealing the silver...

I recently read this article which, sadly, totally goes against the meme.

[–] TheSilverShroud@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That was a fascinating read, thank you for sharing! The fact that Tolkien's world can be analyzed to this degree and still make sense is absolutely mind boggling to me.

Indeed, an excellent article. My favourite line:

The Thain was the nominal Head of State for the Shire, and had the authority to summon the moot and muster in times of emergency, but this was mostly ceremonial, given the lack of emergencies.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

That article was a very good read.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

the so-called political compass as a concept is stupid, but taking it at face value, how are dwarves economically on the left? they work to death in mines and love gold.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

they work to death in mines

Perfect!

and love gold.

No issue there!

[–] rooroo@feddit.de 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Are the arrows supposed to carry meaning? Label your axis, kids!

[–] JudahBenHur@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

also the hobbit films sucked.

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That wasn't the hobbits' fault, was it?

[–] JudahBenHur@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

the book character's fault or the actors

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah that's pretty much it

[–] rockyracoon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Subaltern is a great word.
