From what I've heard, it was more like: Because everything was shot out of order, he didn't retain it like you would if you watched it. Kinda like, do you remember every day of your first job? There's an interview/podcast with him explaining it more.

There was a lot of speculation, I don't think he ever explained in depth until years after the rumors had spread.

I think the story got mixed up on the retelling.

He didn't remember filming.
His years of racecar driving led to a neuro injury
1 and 2 got fused together, becoming "he didn't remember because of the neuro injury".

Just how these things go.
