Fediverse vs Disinformation

395 readers
217 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

This is exactly what people are getting at when they say AI needs regulation.

That said, anyone falling for these obviously AI images has 2.75 brain cells. The issue, though, is that the images are only going to get more realistic as time goes on

The issue is that it doesn't matter how many brain cells you have. These people vote.

That whirring sound you hear is Carlin spinning in his grave

And Sagan.

This is absolutely the worst timeline.

Worst timeline yet

It kind of should matter for the same reason -- because they vote, and they deserve a better education and critical thinking skills than what got them to where they are. But that's me being pedantic.

I thought COVID was done though? We had a party and everything! Is there a new variant?

Additionally, actual photos themselves look more like AI generated photos every day, due to AI filters that everyone runs their photos through in an effort to look flawless. So people are conditioned to view these images of people without pores, or wrinkles, or blemishes, as actual people. "Jenny down the street posts photos of herself that look just like these, so these must be real too".

Harris and Musk I would expect, but Taylor Swift?

I feel like Trump is about to experience what it's like to be sued into the ground by an actual billionaire.

I have no idea why the Trump campaign thinks it’s wise to piss off Taylor Swift and her fans. The Harris deepfakes are in poor taste, but she’s a candidate in the election.

Involuntarily throwing Taylor Swift into the mud of a presidential election is a massive mistake. If she decides to jump in herself, endorses Harris, and starts leading voter registration drives, the election is probably over. -80k people in swing states ultimately decide these things.

I mean swift endorsed Biden in 2020 so that was probably coming for Harris anyway.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I mean, who are people going to believe, Taylor Swift herself, or what Trump says about Taylor Swift? Clearly Trump is the only source of truth!

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

so it begins.

Fraud, yah? This is fraud.
