It's gotta be Primal for me

All the ones I've watched (the top row) are wonderful, but Samurai Jack is a definite standout.

I hate that Grievous from this Clone Wars show isn't really cannon anymore. They did such a good job making him legitimately frightening, and it really sold the idea of him being capable of hunting jedi for sport.

Anyone care to sell me on Primal?

You know those episodes of Samurai Jack where there was almost no dialog but the visuals were amazing? That's most episodes of Primal. Except with more blood and gore because it's not for kids.

I was really really excited about Primal. Samurai Jack was such a formative show for me and Primal sounded like they had handed Tartakovsky a large budget and told him to just do whatever he wanted, for whatever audience, and he chose an R-rated dinosaur theme. Fricking amazing setup. The show itself.....kinda drags. The first 5? episodes are non-stop creative freedom. They were everything I hoped for and more. I remember watching those early episodes with my mouth just hanging open at the sheer audacity. But over time he tries to weave more of a story, integrate more characters and I don't think it works particularly well. The visuals are all incredible, there are great moment in every episode, but I didn't particularly care for season 2. It just wasn't working for me.

If you like Samurai Jack then you should definitely watch this. It's a master of animation and storytelling showing a new, more mature side of himself. It is shocking, beautiful and absolutely worth a watch. I wish season 2 had lived up to my expectations but I'm grateful for what we got.

Primal is a two season show with basically no dialog, a fantastic story, and an incredible sound landscape. The sound design of the show is it's own beast.

Your main complaint at the end will be that there isn't more, while understanding that the story has closed itself.

It's probably Genndy's best work; I don't know how he can top it. And I love both Samurai Jack and Clone Wars.

An arc is a viking becoming a fire monster after making a deal with hell.

It has to be Samurai Jack for me. Absolutely loved that show, and really loved watching it with my grandpa.

One of the things that made Samurai Jack stand out for me was the limited amount of dialog. I learned a lot from it about non-verbal aspects of storytelling.

I never really noticed that until you mentioned it right now, and you're right they really did a lot to set the scene and give context with little or no dialogue at all in a lot of cases

Gotta be Clone Wars for me. Legitimately the best thing to come out of the prequel trilogy. It's a shame the cg show de-canonized it.

Primal. I love Jack but Primal is it's own kind of magic.

Samurai Jack is the only acceptable answer here, all others are delusion ;)

[–] pyrflie@lemm.ee 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Nah man. It's Primal. I love Jack, but Primal is basically the best episode of Jack turned into two seasons.

Genndy topped himself with that show.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I ain't mad at that :)

Primal is brilliant. Art from front to back. I just think that Jack is more internally coherent, and that the visuals were so fundamentally a change to what animation can be, that it tops Primal for me.

[–] pyrflie@lemm.ee 2 points 4 weeks ago

I can respect that take even if I think the art of Primal takes that next step to transcend language and tap into the Ur myth.

I love Jack and won't argue it's greatness. Primal is just that one step further.

[–] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Alright, I'm three eps into primal and i think I'm with you.

genndy is at his best without dialogue, My favorite parts of the Star wars animated show were ones without speech, so primal is completely blowing me away right now.

so evocative and emotional and exciting. and desperate.

absolutely beautiful, too, the colors and movements are captivating.

My favorite part of samurai Jack is that opening sequence where nobody talks and you just learn about his life growing up.

primal is kicking ass so far!

The ninja episode of Jack was probably my favorite. Largely without dialog.

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 6 points 4 weeks ago

Is it me or nobody remembers or talks about The Clone Wars animated?

I just watched some episodes (they were like mini episodes) and at that time I was not very invested in the Star Wars world, but I always found it very cool... And it seems like it just vanished from people's minds lol.

We could have had a full length Popeye movie.

Whatever happened with the Unicorn series? I never was able to catch it.

[–] the_artic_one@programming.dev 2 points 4 weeks ago

I thought it was pretty good, there's a lot going on in the plot so it takes a little bit to get rolling but it's pretty thought-provoking at times.

[–] entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 week ago

It's excellent. Streaming on Max.

100% on Rotten Tomatoes and it deserves it. Season ends on a cliffhanger, so here's hoping we get more, but even if not it's worth seeing because it's so damn well done

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Is Symbiotic Titan good? I've never heard of it

[–] darakan@lemm.ee 1 points 4 weeks ago

It was cancelled before it could have a proper ending. Apparently a bunch more had already been written beyond the 20 that aired.

Having said that it was a fun show from what I remember with some great character designs. A lot of "monster of the week" episodes if that's your style.

[–] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 weeks ago

Dang idk i have to watch the bottom three!

as a complete show, probably star wars right now, he did a LOT with the time he was given.

[–] entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 week ago

Nobody's saying it yet so I will: Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is phenomenal. It's maybe just a bit below Primal and Samurai Jack for me in terms of sheer impact but the scope and ambition of the storytelling and animation has only grown since he did those shows. Unicorn tells a truly bizarre tale in an unusual setting with more of an ensemble cast than most of his works. There's definitely some sense that he's doing it to challenge himself more. But it still works great.

[–] ssm@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 4 weeks ago

Samurai Jack, except the final season

[–] dukatos@lemm.ee 1 points 4 weeks ago

Primal S1, yes. S2 is very bad.
