It should have been my sister's birthday today. Snuck up on me this year. I was fine and then yesterday found myself sobbing out of nowhere. It's been nearly ten years but that makes no difference. I still talk to her in my head all the time. I wish I lived closer to her kids.

Fuck cancer.

Smell a rose and raise a glass today for her? ๐Ÿฅ‚

I think my brain is fried from looking at far too many houses in new estates that all look the same. It's depressing how they are all just plonked onto the block with no consideration for the angle of the sun, and without basic things like eaves to create some shading to the north.

It's also annoying that the agents don't put all the basic information in the listing, especially when they have things like the house plan available from the sales listing already. Plus basic information like whether there is air conditioning in the whole house or only one room is often missing.

I have found a small selection of the least terrible houses to go and inspect next week. It's frustrating that they are pretty much all 4 bedroom 2 bathroom places - I don't need that many rooms, but the step below that is tiny units with no space and no yard. The middle section of the market barely exists. I still have my fingers crossed for one of the few older places around, but 90% of the market seems to be the cookie cutter new estate places.

[โ€“] Catfish@aussie.zone 9 points 1 week ago

Totally agree about the middle not existing. We've ended up with something with the right number of rooms but a bit smaller than wanted, and a massive need to remove grey. But as an ex-rental it's in way better shape than most.

the lying by REAs is phenomenal, trying to make us believe that these places are special or not crap

I have accepted that my apartment will stay feral for another couple of weeks until the workload (and election uncertainty) settles and I can stop working crazy hours. I am stopped work for today, poured a little glass of bubbly (happy birthday big sis) and am chilling with some lo-fi on the speakers.

Food + clean clothes + clean me is all I need to do for a bit.

After experimentation with my adhd meds, I've concluded the following:

I have been taking double the amount required. For 5 years. Insane anxiety which has led to significant social isolation. I've lost friends, and countless other opportunities that could have altered my life in a positive way.

5.fucking.years.

Im very happy that I no longer have the anxiety. It's been a week since I've reduced the dose and there haven't been any negatives.

Same focus, same drive and motivation.

Except I have 5 years (well, 3 years) of conditioning to break out of. I still have this odd "phantom anxiety".

I was handed a bottle of pills and told to figure it out. So of course, once the positive impact of the medication kicked in, I assumed that the negatives were just a side effect id have to live with.

Lame.

Fucking. Lame.

[โ€“] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Don't be too hard on yourself. It's also possible that the dose you originally needed has changed over time as you have built structures and rituals to manage better (disclaimer: not a doctor; anti-disclaimer: the doctors know bugger all about brain chemistry anyway). Its amazing that you can lower the dose and get the same benefit without those side effects!

It sucks that you were left to figure it out on your own, but you are doing amazing. And the next five years will be even better.

and yeah - phantom anxiety is a thing. The difference is being able to look at it and go "ha, that's anxiety, what's that doing there?"

told to figure it out

Yeah that's fucked. Glad you sorted it out.

Iโ€™m horrified by this. Prescribed medication without a starting dose, follow up appointments? Advice on what upper limit is?Told to โ€˜figure it outโ€™? What the hell?! Is this normal for adhd or was it just a shit doctor? It sounds like medical incompetence to me, and youโ€™re just lucky things didnโ€™t end up worse. Iโ€™m glad you have found balance now, but I would be furious.

I'm glad you got it sorted out, and it sucks you weren't given any support. You're not supposed to be the medication expert

My gosh, I don't get why people are so hung up about Acknowledgments of Country. Every single university class or meeting has had one. I don't see why it's a big deal. It is just a statement that acknowledges that we are on Aboriginal land as a sign of respect. I can see how people see it as tokenistic, but I think a) it doesn't have to happen at every single gathering and b) it is the least we can do, considering many Aboriginal people had violent atrocities committed against them, and many communities are the way they are now because of things brought about by settlers.

[โ€“] Catfish@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Broadly my feeling. It's used too often, especially the more wordy versions. Actual Ceremonial occasions like Graduation, absolutely. Every class just makes it into meaningless jibber. I could support plaques along the lines of public halls often having a Monarch portrait on display.

(Edit to add: I've probably the relevant genetics but not the cultural raising. Make of that what you wish)

[โ€“] Taleya@aussie.zone 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I've seen it used on in-work meetings...that's just mindless performance at that point.

Went to a child's birthday party this afternoon and had a bit of fun. We played a game where a donut was threaded onto a rope and dangled above our heads and we had to eat it with no hands in a race. My fat ass came first. They were gluten free donuts and I almost choked on the damned thing ๐Ÿ˜‚

I filled up at one of the local petrol stations today. They still have pump attendants and are the only place I've seen do it.

It's great they still have those roles. It's often high school kids and is a chance for them to start working without going to one of the fast food places. There needs to be more actual first steps on the career ladder jobs like that around.

There's the six degrees of separation theory where it's likely everyone is connected through chains of acquaintances consisting of five intermediaries. There seems to be a loneliness epidemic going on where people are finding it difficult to make friends, but maybe in some way, we are all mutuals?

Today's a regular Saturday like any other so I'm going to vote early, if I can find the place out here.

I swear they've picked the most obscure spot, probably to try make people vote on the day

You'll spot it right away, with a sea of people dressed in all different colours (ymmv) talking loudly.

Ticking off a lot more than I expected. One med appt done, off to go look at shower chairs, plumber coming in on Monday to fix ridiculous leak that makes the kitchen a constant slip zone, next med appt sorted, fixed my mum's app access to medical things, getting the routine and timing down with the eyedrops, sending regular updates to family...

Realising I need to get some work done later this evening and on Sunday though because there's a lot due all at once and I can't work full days over here so better to chip away at things here and there.

Good news flash! The daschund called Valerie that was lost on kangaroo island for over 500 days has been found! Little Valerie defied all expectations and has survived in the wild for all that time, what a champ. She will now be reunited with her owners.

[โ€“] Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 7 points 1 week ago

Doesn't surpise me that it survived considering what they were initially bred for.

I've been bitten by 3 over the years and I was just sitting there not interacting with them.

They look cute but I'm not going up to one to pat it.

it is a nice story though.

Well done Val.

Turns out the soundbar issue is easily resolved by just stealing the one from the brewery, which has an analog input. Mwaha.

But on another note, looking at a HDMI audio extractor (no arc on tv so i wanna split off a toslink) - anyone got one / used one to rec? My usual go to is selby or cable chick but inkstation has a very reasonable $20 model....
