The format of these posts is simple: let's discuss a specific game or series!

Based on a recommendation I received, we'll change things up by actually not discussing a game or series like in earlier posts...

Let's discuss the 8-bit era of gaming. What is your favorite game of this generation? What aspects do you like about it? What doesn't work for you? Feel free to share any thoughts that come up, or react to other peoples comments. Let's get the conversation going!

If you have any recommendations for games or series for the next post(s), please feel free to DM me or add it in a comment here (no guarantees of course).

Previous entries: Animal Crossing, Age of Empires, Super Mario, Deus Ex, Stardew Valley, The Sims, Half-Life, Earthbound / Mother, Mass Effect, Metroid, Journey, Resident Evil, Polybius, Tetris, Telltale Games, Kirby, LEGO Games, DOOM, Ori, Metal Gear, Slay the Spire

Hi guys!

So...just that. I'm looking for some recent developments in the GH clones scene...maybe someone made some GH variation that includes venues and characters? It kinda gave the whole vibe to it.

I installed the mods for GHWT that allow me to play a bunch of extra songs, and that's neat and all, but it plays with an insufferable delay on Linux, way over the limit of what you can adjust/correct in game. It plays at perfect 30/60fps, but it just has intolerable input delay, which forces me to play it on Windows. So...I was wondering if there's anything newer, with more songs etc. And characters, and venues. And blackjack, and hookers.

Thanks!

This was a replay, the first time I played I loved the story.
This time I spend around 100 hours in chapter 2 exploring the world, which was amazing, before moving on with the story.
The things I found annoying-

  1. Weird NPC comments - like remarks by gang on how soon Arthur returned to camp or the blood on him, when he has a deer on his shoulder, when Arthur is the only one feeding them. Or NPC saying why is Arthur following him, while walking down stairs.
  2. Arthur saying he'll look for gang member request item even when he already has it.
  3. Law system, inconsistent economy.
  4. No repercussions of Arthur's behavior with gang or Arthur's contribution to camp funds.

This broke immersion for me on several occasions even when I wanted to believe otherwise as I was loving the world and wanted to be deeply immersed regardless.
But these were minor issues and were overshadowed by the beautiful world.
I finally lost it with all the spoon-feeding and the hand-holding during missions, and when daddy rockstar did not like it when I did not play EXACTLY how they wanted me to, standing in the wrong spot - mission failed, try a different strategy - mission failed, jumped directly outside Danbury's window - guess what - mission failed because Danbury just had a divine vision and destroyed the documents in a second. Fuck this shit.

However much I loved the open world this time and the story in the first play-through. RDR2 is definitely overrated and extremely annoying.

End of rant. This is obviously just an opinion, and enjoying game is the only thing that matters, so if you do, lucky you.

GameFAQs at https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com hosts user created faqs and documents. Unfortunately they are baked into the HTML webpage and cannot be downloaded on their own. I have scraped lot of pages and extracted those documents as regular TXT files. Because of the sheer amount of data, I only focused on a few systems.

In 2020, a Reddit user named "prograc" archived faqs for all systems at https://archive.org/details/Gamespot_Gamefaqs_TXTs . So most of it is already preserved. I have a different approach of organizing the files and folders. Here a few notes about my attempt:

  • only 17 selected systems are included, so it's incomplete
  • folder names of systems have their long name instead short, i.e. Playstation instead ps
  • similarly game titles have their full name with spaces, plus a starting "The" is moved to the end of the name for sorting reasons, such as "King of Fighters 98, The"
  • in addition to the document id, the filename also contain category (such as "Guide and Walkthrough"), the system name in short "(GB)" and the authors name, such as "Guide and Walkthrough (SNES) by BSebby_6792.txt"
  • the faq documents contain an additional header taken from the HTML website, including a version number, the last update and the previously explained filename, plus a webadress to the original publication
  • HTML documents are also included here with a very poor and simple conversion, but only the first page, so multi page HTML faqs are still incomplete
  • no zip archives or images included, note: the 2020 archive from "prograc" contains false renamed .txt files, which are in reality .zip and other files mistakenly included, in my archive those files are correctly excluded, such as nes/519689-metroid/faqs/519689-metroid-faqs-3058.txt
  • I included the same collection in an alternative arrangement, where games are listed without folder names for the system, this has the side effect of removing any duplicates (by system: 67.277 files vs by title: 55.694 files), because the same document is linked on many systems and therefore downloaded multiple times

This comes after a sea of games have been lost due to the creators turning off the servers. While community remake projects like RELB for Lawbreakers, Loadout Reloaded and a server emulator for The Crew exist, they're miles behind where we'd be if publishers just released a way to host our own servers before killing their creations. They need more signatures from European citizens and then the proposal goes to a board who decide what to do with it.

[alt text: two screenshots from the Sims, which appear to recreate an infamous scene from the movie "The Room". In the first frame, a Sim that looks like Tommy Wiseau is standing in front of a rooftop entryway and looking very angry. In the second panel, the camera has panned out, and "Tommy" is looking calmly at another Sim, who is sitting on a chair on the rooftop. ]

I’m currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles and I also played Final Fantasy remake and Golden Sun recently and all of them have wildly different combats. Which got me thinking what JRPG out there had the best combat? This doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily your favorite JRPG as well.

My favorite is Persona 5. I just love figuring out what the weakness of the enemy may be and making sure to arrange my party in such a way that I can handle most combats very easily.

I recently played through a demo for a game called Pinball Spire on steam, and it put me in the mood for playing pinball games. Unfortunately, and I don't know if this is just due to me having bad google-foo, there don't seem to be that many on Steam that catch my interest.

So figured I may as well make a thread asking about what the "state of the art" of pinball video games is. Some of the ones I've played:

  • Sonic Spinball: Very janky, but very unique and I don't think I've seen anyone try to do anything similar to it.
  • Pokémon Pinball and Sonic Pinball Party: Fairly standard pinball games, tbh. They're both on handhelds so they can't do that much.
  • Demon's Tilt and Xenotilt: Just really fun feeling arcade pinball games with a really fun tilt mechanic.

So yeah, know any good PC or console pinball games?

Oh, and can someone help me: I vaguely remember seeing a stream of a pinball game for the Mega Drive/SNES where the ball goes through multiple tables. Does anyone know what that game was called, if it even exists?

Videogames are being destroyed! Most video games work indefinitely, but a growing number are designed to stop working as soon as publishers end support. This effectively robs customers, destroys games as an artform, and is unnecessary. Our movement seeks to pass new law in the EU to put an end to this practice. Our proposal would do the following:

  • Require video games sold to remain in a working state when support ends.
  • Require no connections to the publisher after support ends.
  • Not interfere with any business practices while a game is still being supported.

If you are an EU citizen, please sign the Citizens' Initiative!
