I do this on purpose to myself every time because if I buy chips, I'll just eat them all on the first day. If I have a chance I'll buy more next time and on and on and on.

Instead I just cut myself off because I know I can't trust myself.

My own worst influence is myself.

Same here, not sure if it's because of parents telling us to finish the plate and we can't leave until it's empty (I wasn't picky eater I think) but whenever I have food I just can't put it away for later once it's open or on plate I have to eat it all.

I got injured at work tonight. I'm going to spend the next few days home. First thing I'll do when the shops open is get a buttload of snacks. And maybe some Legos.

Save time and money by just eating Legos as snacks. Er... I guess that's not really saving money. 🤔

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 2 points 15 hours ago

It's the other way around, save time and money by building shit with snacks. Eh, well that's not really saving time either, but...

You can save time thinking about where to put the money by buying Lego to eat

Are you unable to get to a store for another 7 days or is there no longer room for chips in the budget?

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Going to the store means going outside and dealing with people.

Contacting with people during the flu season? No!

I have all my groceries delivered.

groceries=chips

Is this an American problem that I'm too European to comprehend? If I forget to buy something at the store I literally just walk 4 minutes to the nearest store and buy whatever I forgot. Maybe I'll even pick it up on the back home on my bike for even less of a time penalty.

[–] BruceTwarzen@lemm.ee 5 points 16 hours ago

I just sit in my lifted truck, spend 40 dollars on gas, sit in traffic for 2 hours, shoot at some suspicious looking brown people and then get my chips.

Depends on the geography/density/availability of shops where you live. I'm in Australia and the meme absolutely applies. I'm in an area that is considered relatively centric and with plenty of shops and yet the closest one is about a 10' walk (a bit over 1km). You probably don't want to do your weekly shopping there or it will get expensive quickly. Large chain supermarkets are at least 3km away.

Compare that to other places in Europe or South America where you have groceries and the odd shop around the corner in pretty much any residential area.

Haha there are a great many North Americans that live 10+ minutes minimum by car from the nearest grocery store.

I'm a walker (depressingly rare in North America) and my closest shop is about 6 minutes away. I'm considered insane for being willing to walk 40 mins to work

[–] BruceTwarzen@lemm.ee 3 points 16 hours ago

My dad thinks i'm crazy because i walk or bike to my sister's or his place, which is like 40min by foot. Yeah man, if i were as fat as you that would be crazy

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

40 minutes is clearly in the range of doable walks, although if it were a commute I'd do it by bike every time which would shorten it down to 10 minutes, probably.

[–] spankinspinach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 hours ago

Haha yup, can confirm! It's a commute, I used to ride a bike (half the time), but then the lady moved in and we switched to walking for no real reason. It's about 3km each way but makes for a nice bookend to the workday :)

[–] quatschkopf43 2 points 18 hours ago

Probably more like a city / country problem
