Don't forget about the intentional lack of people of color in this image!

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 81 points 5 days ago

"We had to leave the city to get away"

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I don't think people of color existed back then.

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 6 points 4 days ago

"Well look at that negro. Why is he walking around without supervision?"

Hey now, they don't want to bring back everything from the 50s... Suggest bringing back the tax rates from those days, especially for the upper end of the income scale, and they'll look at you like you're crazy.

Or there's the fact that union membership peaked in the 50s.

[–] magic_lobster_party@fedia.io 88 points 5 days ago (1 children)

What they mean is that they wish they could be the grandfather

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 64 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yeah they’re pissed that the cycle got broken and they never got their turn.

The good old times that never existed, not in the 50s not in 2008, not last year.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was going to say the 90s and 00s before the recession was better, but then I remembered it wasn't great for the LGBT. Homophobia is casual and mainstream up until recently.

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You had 911 and these pointless wars and so on and I am sure in the 90s there was enough going on that I did not perceive because I was a child.

There's only one thing Republicans want back. Minorities and women knowing their place

[–] Infomatics90@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I am watching the handmaids tale right now. holy shit.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah it's scary how much of Margaret Atwood's speculative fiction turned out to be speculativly accurate. Makes me really worried we're heading towards an Oryx and Crake future.

[–] Infomatics90@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

Watching is so far, just the things they talk about and the names the group had before taking over the government are really a retrospect of what has been happening, and something the US is on the path of.

meanwhile they were doing syphilis experiments on black American and everyone else who were not white without a history in American slavery was deported.

Shit times all around.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 58 points 5 days ago (1 children)

"I can't get through my day without a shit ton of drugs"

tbqf me too

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 26 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I haven't seen that one before. Is it "to be quite fair"?

Self titled EP

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Damn, I had "Frank" instead of fair. Not enough people use frank D:

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

To be queer, Frank.

[–] sanpedropeddler@sh.itjust.works 44 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

The drugs and child abuse ones are still accurate.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 59 points 5 days ago

And modern Americans are doing their damnedest to make the polio one true again as well.

They want to go back in time? Okay let's go back to before Europeans even arrived to America and natives were doing their own thing. Much simpler times.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I still can't get through my day without tons of drugs. Have you seen the hellscape that we live in?

[–] mynameisigglepiggle@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I think we need to start normalising taking lots more drugs just to cope

[–] Malfeasant@lemm.ee 4 points 4 days ago

We did that already, late 60s into 70s... The music was better, but the musicians didn't last as long.

Ballpark numbers (guesstimated by ChatGPT). In the 50s (after the ww2 explosion of the US industrial capacity) you came home after an 8 hour shift in a fridge making factory and had an income that could easily keep up 3 kids (including education), 2 cars, 1 stay at home wife and a house (like in The Simpsons). Since then the work productivity has risen 600% - 700%, yet the average income has risen less than 150% and the median icome less than 80%.

[–] thunderous_applause@lemm.ee 8 points 4 days ago

Basically the plot of Mad Men

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

It's natural to remember the hits.

If you ever go back and review the whole catalogue, you won't be nearly so impressed.

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 19 points 5 days ago (4 children)

I think they mean a single income household and being able to own a home

[–] RangerJosie@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yes, but also what OP posted. When the women and minorities "knew their place" and the queer folks just didn't exist in public.

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You’re right some people do think that way, and others are convinced to do so because they think their worsening economic situation is because of someone else’s better social situation, when in reality it’s greed and oligarchic socio-political rule which ruins it for everyone across the board.

That’s the first part, the second part is to have oversight to prevent corruption and mismanagement

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago

If you’re white, so you didn’t get redlined into some worse neighborhood.

[–] callouscomic@lemm.ee 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Probably mostly for middle class white people. A pretty significant chunk of the population I think struggled to enjoy those benefits.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It is almost like if you kill off half the male population there is twice as much stuff and two women for every man. We just need another world war to get there am I riiight?

Bottom right two is exactly what they want.

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 13 points 5 days ago

So wholesome.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Well grandpa seems to be enjoying it.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 14 points 5 days ago

Brining that trench energy and undiagnosed PTSD to family life

I finally understand MAGA.
