I remember this being a whole challenge. I remember licking one and being unimpressed. Pretty sure most people were exaggerating how bad it was.

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Either mine don't have the coating, or I'm immune to it somehow.

[–] rockhstrongo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

I finally tried licking one recently, and it didn't taste like anything

I can't believe I'm going to get up, find a cartridge, and lick it after posting this. Damn you.

Edit: It's true.

[–] CatZoomies@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago

The ultimate gamer high is to take a deep breath from the Steam Deck exhaust, lick a Switch cartridge, hold your breath, and then chug down a G Fuel.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 18 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I learned that a ways back, told a streamer and gave him a buck to confirm it. Dollar well spent lol.

[–] thomasloven@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

That’s good.

Part of the ritual of buying a new Switch game for me is licking it. More difficult for digital downloads, but I was determined and found a way.

Stick your tongue in the ethernet port?

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 3 hours ago

Help it's stuck

Can a human tongue discern the taste of a TCP packet compared to an UDP packet?

[–] conartistpanda@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Put the cable in your mouth so you can feel the electric impulses. If TCP is being used you can feel the packets going back and forward, but if youre using UDP you can only feel them going forward.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

There's only one way for you to find out for sure.

This post is a trick to make you lick game cards and find out

[–] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 83 points 21 hours ago (5 children)

And it worked. I just licked one. It tasted horrible.

[–] Matty_r@programming.dev 13 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

But, that might have been an outlier. You need to lick more just in case.

[–] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I'll be sure and do that... :-)

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

You won't really know until you put it in your mouth and chew it up.

This could probably be used to check for authentic game cartridges. I'm not going to be licking used games to find out if they're real, though.

Jokes on them I can't taste it anymore after COVID, there is no longer any deterrent from me eating their cartridges

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 21 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

If you do end up eating one, tell us how many bytes it took.

The covid's collateral effect in my case was in my heart, you're a luck guy

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago

I wouldn't call either of you lucky. In fact, I feel really bad for both of you.

[–] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry to hear that, friend. Have a good friend who is also dealing with long covid for years. He's been on different drug trials but nothing had much of an effect. He's very slowly getting some energy back, but still can't work a full time job.

[–] BruceTwarzen@lemm.ee 2 points 12 hours ago

I had a friend who got covid pretty early, he was a carpenter and can't really work ever since. He's winded after walking up a few steps. But he's also an anti vaxxer covid denier, so i find it hard to feel bad, because i'm pretty sure he dragged some other people down with him.

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 24 points 19 hours ago

I've known about this for years, and I'm still convinced that in a few years time you're going to see collectors and/or used game store clerks going "Ah see this one is valuable because it's got the bittering agent still intact. It hasn't all been licked off."

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 36 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Many battery manufacturers do this with CR disc shaped batteries as well.

[–] subtext@lemmy.world 17 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Interestingly, this coating can cause issues for some products like the Apple AirTags. I know this because I used one of these batteries with a bitterest in the AirTag on my keys and the AirTag didn’t work.

[–] Stache_@lemmy.ml 11 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

And what’s funny is that the solution is to lick the coating off either sides of the battery to get them to work.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I have to assume there’s a common non tongue applied solvent that works

[–] GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk 2 points 6 hours ago

People apparently rub them with IPA.

I need to have a try of this, as I regularly burn through 2032s.

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 21 hours ago

Because of this, I christen my cartridges by licking them.
