If you call the other side a Yankee, shouldn’t you identify yourself as Dixie rather than “southerner”?
Dixie is the region, not a person. Like how Yankees are (properly) from New England.
The monuments should not be destroyed. They should be put into museums with a list of every atrocious thing the person depicted has done.
Nothing worse than a Yankee telling a Southerner that his burning crosses in black people's front yards don't matter.

They didn't get free food. In the common case they had to grow and manage their own after their coerced work was completed.
Imagine breaking your back for a 10-12 hour day under a boss with a whip and then having to do your own farming, slaughtering, milling and household work.

The biggest mistake Grant and the u.s made, was easing up after the war. They should have occupied the south and crushed every last Confederate there. Three South was allowed to recover after the war instead of being eliminated the way we did with the Nazis
In Grant's defence, he absolutely crushed the KKK, and the issue of the South worming its way back into power was largely post-Grant's presidency.
