I'll revise my earlier statements, this is another line I want to see only go up!
Now they just need to make up 73% of energy consumption.
Given this includes coal, oil and gas, this will take a while.
Thatβs why you neat to provide viable public transportation and change to heat pumps.
One important thing to always keep in mind with news like this is that there's a difference between electricity and energy, where the latter includes e.g. trucks burning petrol or the metal industry burning coal.
Still a good sign, but electricity use if about 20% of our total energy use, if I recall correctly. With the caveat that, as we switch to a more renewable future, much of our energy use is transitioned to electricity as well (e.g. electric vs petrol cars).
But -just to provide some context as I often see those stupid arguments that electrification cannnot work when we need that much elelctricity- the "total energy use" includes production losses and transport of fossil fuels as well as comparably very low efficiency (in heating and combustion engines in particular). So despite having 80% of the energy use to replace with electricity it's not a factor of 5 but more closer to ~2,5 (even less for countries with a lower amount of heavy, energy intensive industries).
And in general it's a good idea to conserve energy in addition to electrification, of course :)
