A reminder that sheriffs are generally elected and are almost always attention seeking assholes. ACAB to the grave.

Edit was for clarity.

Is it time to be violent yet?

[–] coaxil@lemm.ee 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

You yanks should have started the violence well and truely by now tbh! Now it's just a combo of sad and horrifying watching this from afar!

[–] PresidentCamacho@lemm.ee 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's more horrifying to watch it from within lol

[–] coaxil@lemm.ee 1 points 4 hours ago

I could only attempt to imagine, :( I really hope this mess is over as fast and as neatly as possible for you guys.

[–] _wizard@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No. Please start anytime you're ready. Be safe out there, friend.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 20 points 1 day ago

You definately shouldn't be violent at a time like this! wink wink

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

@_wizard@lemmy.world , They already decided. Stand down men!

I think it was Mao Zedong who said "political power grows out of the ballot box." or something like that.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemm.ee 64 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So the military said “no.”

[–] lemmy_user_838586@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He just hasn't removed the right people...yet. The military will be coming, make no mistake.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

IMO it's unlikely, from the day you "swear in", throughout all of boot camp and at regular trainings after its beat into you that you serve the constitution and that you can and SHOULD disregard an illegal order and what constitutes an illegal order AND an illegal order from the Commander in chief especially is still an illegal order and should be dealt with accordingly

And let me tell you, there's far far FAR more enlisted just waiting for an illegal order to come through so they can finally tell an officer to go fuck themselves

[–] notabot@lemm.ee 19 points 1 day ago

The issue is that they're doing what they can to make those orders legal. They're not there yet, they'll hopefully hit plenty of resistance before they get there, and they're not exactly renowned for being competent, but they're working on it.

[–] 3abas@lemm.ee 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So much wishful thinking.

The US military is the biggest commitor of war crimes behind Israel, they regular slaughter civilians and laugh about it, and the only ones to ever get in trouble and serve time are always the whistle blowers.

What planet do you live on?

[–] refurbishedrefurbisher@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

Well, you see, those people that the American military murders on a regular basis are brown people in a faraway country, so they don't count or something.

As with most things, people don't care until it personally affects them or people they personally know.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

The racism subject aside, I DO think a the majority of them are gonna give big wtf's when they're told to do that to American citizens on American soil, regardless of skin color. There will be some who enjoy it because they're scum, but I definitely know that even the craziest motherfuckers with the most PTSD who enlisted in several branches would tell you to go fuck yourself if you deployed them to New York and said beat the shit out of or shoot these civilians. They may be dumb as fuck, but they aren't all that stupid. And yes I know this is naive and optimistic.

[–] 3abas@lemm.ee 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

if you deployed them to New York and said beat the shit out of or shoot these civilians

That would never happen. They would be told to control the violent mobs and restore the safety and security of law abiding patriotic citizens. And they'll follow orders like every other military in the history of humanity.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 hours ago

Oh those things are important. I'll lick boots for that!

I should ask my mom what her defense of police is now

[–] aramova@infosec.pub 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Oh honey you just don't understand. He's doing this for your safety, and I trust him. You know you'd really like him if you gave him a chance. I thought I raised you to know better."

Or some equally gaslit shit if they're anything like mine.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, no nothing like that.

She's staunchly against the idea that ACAB, and will fight tooth and nail that there are some bad apples but most want to help, yadda yadda.

there are some bad apples

What do bad apples do, Mom? What is the consequence of a few "bad apples" that needed to be immortalized in idiom? Because I'm pretty sure the saying isn't "A few bad apples don't negatively affect the bunch in any significant way".

"You won't be arrested if you don't do anything wrong. Just let them do their jobs!"

[–] doug@lemmy.today 37 points 1 day ago

You mean the police aren’t already militarized? We had them riding APCs out here in PDX in his first term. Oy vey do I hate this man.

[–] LarryLurkman@lemm.ee 21 points 1 day ago

As our sleazy ass SCOTUS is derelict in its duty to protect the Fourth Amendment, Colorado's "Make My Day" law applies to warrantless raids in Denver. State's rights, motherfuckers!

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

That photo...just 🤌

"show a posse of racist police that was the beginning of police cars in the US starting to fly Confederate flags"

Fuck me, now my hat makes me look like a fascist.

And I was just starting to look good in it

One order seeks to compile a list of so-called sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with Trump’s mass deportation policies.

JB Pritzker has entered the chat

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If I were JB Pritzker, I'd activate the Illinois State Guard. They need time to get staffed, trained, and procure equipment.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm wondering what will happen when a state's National Guard gets conflicting orders from the governor of that state and the US Executive Branch.

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The national guard can be requisitioned by the federal government. However, the state guard (often trained by/alongside the national guard and sharing members) cannot. They only answer to the governor.

I know we all felt like it was wild when De Santis reformed the Florida State Guard. But now I feel blue states need to do it.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago

Ahhh, I was unfamiliar with the State Guard.

The State Guard is the State's non-federally recognized military force which may be composed of members of the Unorganized Militia who are 18 through 45 years of age, and those persons who are 45 through 65 years of age as determined necessary by the Governor.

I know from some previous digging on gun laws that basically everyone in Illinois is a member of the "Unorganized Militia."

Whenever the Commander-in-Chief deems it necessary or advisable for the purpose of executing the laws of the State or to prevent an actual or threatened violation of law; when the nation is at war and a requisition or order has been made, or is likely to be made, by the President of the United States calling the National Guard, or parts thereof, into the National service; or for any other emergency, he or she may issue a proclamation calling for volunteers [my bold] to serve in the State Guard. Persons who answer the call and who are appointed or enlisted in the State Guard shall serve in State Active Duty status.

As of today, then, the Illinois State Guard is ephemeral. It will only crystallize into reality when and if the governor activates it by proclamation, and then it will be made up of volunteers.

[–] metaldream@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

Most blue states already have a state guard. But their military capabilities are very limited.

And some of them state guards are big.

On Monday, staffers placed signs on the White House lawn showing mugshots of immigrants, linking them to crimes with the word ”ARRESTED” written in all caps
