Welcome aboard. For security reasons, we need you to pee in this cup.

The Orville is a satirical science fiction drama created by Seth MacFarlane and modeled after classic episodic Star Trek with a modern flair.

This community was created a long time ago, back when it was unknown if The Orville would be renewed after its purchase by Disney during the 20th Century Fox buyout. It has been posted to a few times, but has otherwise lay dormant. What's interesting is the number of the subscribers for a community that is effectively dead - I believe there are a lot of people that want it to be active. Now that The Orville has started filming it's fourth season (the first under Disney's banner), I have assumed control of this community from its long-gone creator in the hopes it can be revived.

This community is for anything related to The Orville, the people producing and starring in it, any news, discussion, or memes. Just follow instance rules and be civil. We are not opposed to Star Trek (old or new), we are allies of Trekkies and every other scifi fandom. That being said, be on the look out for clowns and try not to step in Yaphit.

Try not to die of cancer before season 4 airs.

[–] vaguerant@fedia.io 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

See, in the old days, a man could just get sick and die, you know? Now, they have to "wage a battle". And the reason I don't like it is 'cause in the old days, they'd go "Hey, that old man died!" Now, they go, "He lost his battle." That's no way to end your life, you know? "What a loser that guy was, last thing he did was lose!" I'm pretty sure... I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure, if you die, the cancer also dies at exactly the same time. So that, to me, is not a loss, that's a draw.

Not necessarily true.

I'm really going to miss Norm and Yaphit. I'm not sure if I would want them to recast him.

[–] vaguerant@fedia.io 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, it seems like it would be pretty easy to justify in story terms by having Yaphit split or merge with another gelatinous alien, but all that really gets you is a new blob that's not Norm Macdonald. The blob being Norm was a large part of the appeal, so I don't know who you'd get to recreate that vibe.

[–] teft@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe merge it with a blob that is voiced by Bill Burr. I think he has the same flavor as Norm but is distinct.

[–] toast@retrolemmy.com 3 points 1 week ago

Bill Burr would be fantastic. Unfortunately, I am afraid we might get someone like Billy Crystal.

With disney owning this paramount should make a show about a spacefaring society with psychic power enhanced warriors who fight with plasma swords.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

All-girl cast.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Sadly the enhanced warriors fighting with plasma swords were not psychic in Paramount's show 😞

Apparently the term glory hole has another more innocent meaning, one which I presume predates the sexual one.

A rather old fashioned woman at work once said her walk in cupboard is right glory hole. Everyone instantly laughed and she had no idea why. We had to look online to find what she actually meant. Apparently the term goes way back. Her usage was that the room was a complete mess.

Aw heeeell yeah. I have my doubts about the influence Disney will have on the outcome, but hopefully we at least get a couple more great seasons!

Wow, so it's confirmed that Seth has a new girlfriend?

[–] MyBrainHurts@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

I had no idea there wasa season 4 coming, this is amazing!

[–] sarcasticsunrise@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I know there was talk of it being renewed for a 4th season, I didn't know it was actually filming! Avis be praised!

[–] picandocodigo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Cool! Has there been any recent updates on season 4?

Maybe this is a good time for a rewatch :D

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

The last thing I heard was that principal photography (filming with the actors) began this month (April 2025).

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Let's face it, it's good to to keep coming back until they get a Star Trek live action show that's actually done right again.

[–] vaguerant@fedia.io 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wait, has this actually been confirmed? I know we've had a sort of drip-feed of rumors, like when Scott Grimes was reported to have told people they'd be shooting "next year" (said in 2024, so meaning 2025), but has there been confirmation since?

[–] Vinny_93@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you need a source to tell you what you want to hear in the title.

These things rarely come out of nowhere so I applaud the initiative to revive the community in order to keep us informed about the show.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That seems to be what Grimes was mentioning. Though by the time I heard that news (March) it had already been updated to say that the start of filming was pushed back to April.

The Planetary Union Podcast, the show’s official podcast, also confirmed what Grimes said. That they knew Hulu had confirmed a fourth season, just not yet announced it.

Additionally, The Orville was listed on California’s list of shows that qualified for a tax credit in 2025. Why bother if there’s no new season?

A lot of little tidbits here and there, but no substantial news yet. A lot of smoke for there to not be any fire.

Do you guys own the DVDs, Bluray or just stream it? I was looking into buying the DVDs and was curious about them.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

There are no BluRays yet. Only the first two seasons have been released on DVD. The only way to watch everything right now is to subscribe to Hulu in America or Disney+ everywhere else.

[–] DmMacniel 2 points 1 week ago

Damn that sucks :/

Well, the first two seasons it is then and cheers for the post on c/tenforward :)

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

like 6 months ago we bought the seasons to stream on amazon. not sure if that is still an option.

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

That’s interesting. I thought I heard Adrianne Palicki say she wouldn’t come back.

[–] gurnu@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Eh, the show went very action heavy and quite boring after season 2, and with Disney making it.. I'm not holding my breath after seeing how soulless nuWars is

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I kind of feel the same as you, but also hopeful and excited at the same time.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Amazing!

So, do I get the cup to pee in from you or do I need to bring my own cup or??

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Cups are 25 cents.
