Fediverse vs Disinformation

1195 readers
235 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

For a while it seemed like the dubious hypothesis that the virus that causes Covid did not jump from animals to humans, but was released from a Chinese lab, might be fading away. But the US government and the media are breathing new life into this zombie idea, contributing to the vilification of China and undermining actual scientific research.

honestly this story at least sounds like it could be true, have not seen any evidence for it so i still dont believe it and i havent looked into it in a long time… because even if it did originate in a chinese lab its escape would most certainly have been an error and not intentional so… like who cares. Its not like the chinese didnt suffer as much or more than the rest of the world did during covid.

Most people aren't actually free thinkers they just follow pop subculture. It's like buying mass produced clothes and pretending it makes individualistic.
