Why would anyone travel to a nation that might arrest you and lock you up for what?? saying something bad about the government one time

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 76 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It isn't even lock you up in the US but possibly send you to a slave camp in El Salvador. Why would any Canadian risk that?

Time for what the US always suggests to other countries - time for Regime Change. Until Trump, his family, and his cronies are out of government, boycott the USA.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 36 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

A slave camp or perhaps an execution camp. No one even knows for sure.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Why not both? Work them until they die of exhaustion and then the slavers can avoid paying for both food and construction.

[–] NoxAstrum@lemmy.ca 69 points 2 weeks ago

Governor Newsom should look to his own affairs first.

I wonder, if we were threatening their sovereignty, openly and repeatedly, would they come visit us? No, they'd be losing their minds. I see California as one of the less outrageous parts of the US, but that doesn't mean I'm going to suddenly give up my integrity and self-respect because they need my business.

If you want Canadians to travel to the US, get rid of trump first. It's not entirely a moral issue anyway, it's genuinely dangerous for foreigners now. Why the hell would I risk my freedom? Because I feel sorry for their economy? No thanks.

As a Californian - fuck Newsom. He's riding to the right far too much, especially lately.

My Canadian friends - the US needs you, probably significantly more than you need us right now. Don't back down against the fascism and tyranny; the fact that we're hurting for your money is how you know you're succeeding. Those of us trying to stand up inside the US can use all the external pressure we can get.

Newsom needs to be replaced by a real progressive. He's trying to shift to the middle at a time when the whole Democratic party just showed what an absolutely horrible tactic it is.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Agreed. Thankfully, he's term limited as governor.

[–] 3dmvr@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

He went far right becuase all the trump supports popping out in california, this states been lesning right its frustrating to see

[–] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 45 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Ah yes, let's travel to the state where the Govenor has a new podcast with his first guests being "I hope that black pilot is qualified" Charlie Kirk, "I'm banned from the UK for being so racist" Michael Savage, and "Nazi salute" Steve Bannon.

Oh yeah, and that's a Democrat doing this, the "normal" political party in the U.S..

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This shift to the right will hurt him. California won't leave him there long.

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

They couldn't keep him if they wanted to. California has term limits, and his last term is coming to an end. Now he's trying to position himself for whatever he's doing next, which some suggest is running for president.

The whole podcast is probably just a big "look Mom, I can reach across the aisle!"

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

Don't ever forget that the Democrats are also against us.

Biden increased tariffs against Canada during his Presidency that Trump had put in place during his first term.

The US has never, and will never, be a true ally to Canada.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 34 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thats a big old fuck no, American friendos. With all due respect, get fucked.

Who wants a free final trip to El Salvador?

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 25 points 2 weeks ago

Round trip, right?

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 28 points 2 weeks ago

Why would you visit a state that recently voted to keep prison slavery?

[–] OverTheFiniteSun@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 weeks ago

Pretty hilarious coming from the US governor that's been courting US right wingers on his podcast...

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 weeks ago

I get why the gov wants us to come visit. But it's incredibly tone-deaf not to know why it's not happening.

Mr Newsom must know why that's not happening. He's not an idiot.

Maybe Hawaii will secede first, and I can take my mom to hanuama bay one last time while she can still travel. I hate that it's the most likely scenario that ends with my mom honouring my uncle - it was his favourite place on the planet - but it's more likely the USA will ditch the U than it will remember the S.

[–] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fuck you murica! You don't need us!

[–] don@lemm.ee 15 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, they do, it’s just the sane people haven’t figured out how to punch the assholes’ faces in.

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 week ago

you gotta leave the us first california

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck Trumps America!

[–] MyMotherIsAHamster@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Newsom is a hell of a joker, or a complete idiot. Get fucked, America.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

He's nether, but we have two choices, try and don't try. What he needs us CA national guard promising no feds will put hands on travelers.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Except he can't cause you still cross the boarder such means TSA can do get you.

[–] MyMotherIsAHamster@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even if he could guarantee complete safety, there's no way in hell I'm stepping into the land of the Christo-fascists, or giving their economy my money.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

No, I agree with you there. Any pain you can cause to the US right now is deeply justified.

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml -4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

but we have two choices

Didn't the Liberal party run and win on promising electoral reform?

[–] MyMotherIsAHamster@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Yep, I voted Liberal just for that, then Justin walked away from that promise without even trying and lost my vote in the subsequent elections.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Man, The two choices wasn't about voting, it was about the current CA gov choosing to fight against Trump's gov or not fight.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago
[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

No. California likes those Canadians spending their sweet sweet dollars in the US. When California leaves the US, then we’ll talk. My boycott of the US lasts a lifetime or longer.
