No politics, sorry. I know that leaves slim pickings but there are already plenty of politics communities, I was looking / creating a place just for news that is not about our nightmarish government.

Information is just a black hole now, I tried to ignore it too but its impossible to escape. These terrible decisions impact the entire world, its better to know than to not.
Oh, I'm extremely in favor of it being posted, I just meant to keep things organized by having it in a more government-focused community.
That being said... I get what you're saying. When I originally made this, it was supposed to be non-political just because there weren't unproblematic places to post US news that wasn't politics. But, since then, news about what the government is doing has become pretty all-encompassing, and I do feel weird posting stuff that's literally just what is happening in the US to a "politics" community just because it involves Trump or the government. The election is over, it's just what's reality at this point.
The votes seem to indicate some support for the idea of it being just an "all US news including government stuff" community, which I would be open to. What do people think about it?
I get your predicament... ah... if only we could return to the days before Jan 2025 where the US government wasn't trying to screw up the whole country every day.
Trump isn't the only part of the US government. Parts of it have been trying to screw up the whole country since its inception.
Parts of it will be trying to screw up the whole country throughout all the country's lifetime, for as long as the country is run by humans. That's just the nature of humans. That's why the US government was so carefully designed, and thus why that design has survived and done alright so far.
For it being so long ago, flying blind as it were, the guys who put it together did alright. The thing is, there is no circumstance where government is "done" and we can just sit back because the people in charge are finally the right people. That's why a lot of these high-minded things like the Bolsheviks or the Cultural Revolution end in ruin almost before they've begun: Because their thinking is based not on "how do we keep the people safe from all the maniacs in government," but "how do we structure power for the benevolent people at the top and what do they work on."
The first one is a better structure. Always. The people who thirst for power will always be trying to screw things up for everyone else, and succeeding to some extent. It's just how it works.

It was decent for what it was, but it's also 250 years out of date, and piled on with 250 years of bloat.
You also can't just have one position, you have to work to limit the works of narcissistic power mongers... but you also have to work to support the people. It's never just one or the other, it's both. And a thousand other things. There's no one thing or another that defines "proper government". That's high-minded thinking.

True that. Almost no one in history is a super-great person. A couple of them are. Mostly, they're just people, with all the ridiculousness and depravity that goes along with that mantle.

Kind of. The US, among its other numerous flaws, was one of the last countries in the world to outlaw slavery, although it was far from the first to build an economy on it.
On the other hand, the kind of voice the women didn't get, nobody got in most other countries at the time, aside from a handful of assholes who were much worse than the founding fathers.

I don't know man. Partly. The people involved would be baffled and horrified at what's come of their creation, I think. But, at the same time, a lot of the underlying problems that are fucking it up are underlying problems with people.
Basically, I think for the most part, people get the quality of government they deserve, in the long term, because their government will be as good as they enforce it to be through struggle, or as bad as they let it get without starting to fight to fix it.

Yeah, agreed. This is, I think, pretty much 100% exactly what I was saying.
Sorry about that ... and its the first thing on the Rules! Now a days I think of news = politics. Will do better next time.
I think I might actually change the rule. People seem like they definitely want to be able to talk about it, and the landscape has changed since I made the rule.
A lot of what used to be “politics” is now an urgent emergency that affects us all day to day.
