Welcome

Welcome to c/vegan@lemmy.world. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • pictures of text require alt-text;
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future (see current stickied discussion).
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Misinformation, particularly that which is dangerous or has malicious intent, is subject to removal.

Tofu kind of just tastes like nothing.

Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and saviour, the spice cabinet?

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

“X has no flavor”

“But you can add things that do have flavor!”

[–] crispy_kilt@feddit.de 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Think of me the next time you add salt or any other spice, will you?

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I add flavorful ingredients to other flavorful ingredients all the time. I just want each one to contribute a flavor of its own. Tofu, rice, and pasta all fail to contribute.

Guess you also never use water in cooking

They're really just good vehicles for other flavors, like bread or potatos.

They contribute texture, sure. And with enough maillard reaction, potato and bread can pull their own weight. I just hate the idea of filler ingredients. I had to make my food stretch when I was younger, and now I don’t have to (for now), so I’d much rather just have more of the genuinely tasty parts and leave out the bland bulk. Every rice dish is better to me without the rice, for instance. Same flavor, but more of it per bite.

I was also raised to believe that foods like rice were "filler". Refined grains might not have much to contribute, but it's been a lifechanging experience to have learned better that whole grains are nutritional and culinary cornerstones.

I hate to be the one to ask but is there a video?

[–] Gloomy@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 months ago

I got you bro.

NSFW, in case that wasn't obvious.

I'm a freak, but what the fuck?

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

You're also being kind of judgmental.
