That flag was a navy flag. I'm not sure if spiked helmet of the German army and navy flag fit that well together.
The US also fought against that country among other reasons because said German navy sank a ship with 1200 passengers, including 128 US-Americans.
Judging from the use of the word "lads" I think any usa-centric deconstruction is probably culturally tangential
