Why does trump have secret service if he is not the president? Sorry dumb canadian moment

All former presidents get secret service until they die.

The Secret Service protects not just the president, but their family, major runners for the race, and their families. Due to the assassination of Robert Kennedy in 1968, the Secret Service was made to protect all major runners for the presidency, as his assassination could have been stopped if he had more protection than the event's guards.

That's actually really cool, surprised I didn't know this

I reckon this will come to Canada soon too. Trudeau used to go to metro stations and just say good morning to people on their way to work after he won first term. He doesn't do this anymore for obvious reasons

Not only do all former presidents get a detail, all frontrunners with a credible shot at winning get secret service protection. I'm not sure what the exact requirements for that are, but Trump would almost certainly meet them.

When the nomination becomes official, they get a secret service detail.
