I'm not sure what you're asking, you mean if you use a copyrighted image and tweak it slightly?
or like drawing Mario and you're worried Nintendo is going to sue?
is it just fan art?
in all those cases, yes, uploading to a different site and then posting the link here would remove the instance one separation from liability.
No, the images would be untouched. And those don't really contain copyrighted characters either.
The reason to upload it directly to an instance would be just for better combability with lemmy (some image links may not show correctly on lemmy, or may be missing the thumbnail...)
On reddit, they upload it directly, and link the source.
If it's just for compatibility's sake, I haven't had any problem uploading any images in any format I've tried to Lemmy so far, and I upload a lot here, so I don't think you're going to have any trouble there.
If that's your only concern, I don't think you have much to lose by trying to upload stuff and then seeing how it goes.
It seems like his concern is something he doesn't want to be clear about.
it is puzzling. what are your theories?
Haha, I'm not sure what you mean by that. I'm simply wondering if having someones artwork uploaded on a lemmy instance (even if credited) can cause copyright issues. I don't really know how that works.
Edit: Maybe I'm wording it incorrectly. I'm talking about someone filing a DMCA complaint / "unlawful reproduction or distribution of their work"...
