The Greek-flagged Sounion is carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil and a spill has the potential to be among the largest from a ship on record

The Greek-flagged crude oil tanker Sounion, which was attacked by Yemen’s Houthis last week, is still on fire in the Red Sea and now appears to be leaking oil, the Pentagon has said.

The tanker was targeted last week by multiple projectiles off Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah. The Houthis, who control Yemen’s most populous regions, said they were behind the attack.

The Sounion is carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil and if a spill occurs, has the potential to be among the largest from a ship in recorded history.

Push the tanker into the Hodeidah port. See if they like to clean up the spill. Fucking idiots.

edit: This is not a hard policy proposal for fuck's sake, it's just venting frustration. Real hard policy proposal: end the Israeli apartheid and work out a just peace in Israel & Palestine, then work out a way to cool down the whole region. At the same time, push for decarbonization and get rid of oil dependency.

They wont.

But in this case its kind of stupid to go through a activly bombarded zone too...

Just another reason to fucking stop burning this shit for energy

Legit my first thought was "what the fuck, you KNOW ships are being shot at through there, why the FUCK would you knowingly steer THAT into it"

I'll let other people argue about who is right or wrong, but it seems like common sense to avoid areas of conflict.

I'm not going to drive by a shootout just because the road I'm on only passes the shooting. I will avoid that area like the plague until the shooting won't start back up.

Not really an option with regards to international trade. It's the same reason why people still go to work and live ordinary lives in a war zone.

But in this case its kind of stupid to go through a activly bombarded zone too…

It's one of the most densely traveled sea lanes in the world.

Wouldn't you know it, two things can be true at the same time.

In the united states, I-90 is one of the busiest interstates, but if someone is actively shooting at vehicles on it, it's still stupid to drive through the shooting.

Extra stupid if you're hauling oil.
