Hello new Lemmy friends!
Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.
The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.
Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.
We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

I don’t know if anyone is aware of what’s happening with the wrongful death suit against Disn3y, but I’ll summarize and maybe if S or any of her followers still think supporting this place/company/corporation is okay they’ll think twice.
To summarize, there was a woman who was at Disney, and she has severe allergies to dairy and nuts, and she informed the serving staff of her allergies, and they promised to accommodate her but she was still served those allergens. She died as a result of her anaphylactic reaction, and her husband was seeking legal action.
Because he subscribed to Disn3y+ on a trail basis for his PlayStation a few years ago, Disn3y is essentially claiming he cannot sue. I’m going to include some screenshots so you can go and look at these articles in the actual legal information its self as well as review your own Disn3y+ terms of service that people agree to.
So a person died due to negligence, even though they mentioned that they had severe allergies, and this family cannot seek any type of restitution due to evil legal loopholes, that this horrible company has sneakily included into a streaming service subscription. EFF Disn3y . Influencers are bought and paid for too, and if they don’t immediately see how evil this is and speak up, then they DO value money over lives. Do not support Disn3y.
I believe the plaintiff is looking for $50,000. I hope if it goes to arbitration they award him $500,000
Absolutely right. Very vile. Hopefully, the lawyers win this and ban binding clauses like this. However, small correction - Disney is claiming this should be handled in an arbitration court - ie, private. They doesn't mean they won't pay out for wrongful death, it just means the case isn't public and others won't benefit from the outcome. I'm not saying that's a good thing. Disney is absolutely in the wrong ans hopefully the courts decide clauses like this are illegal. The debator inside of me is also saying, I also probably wouldn't want this case being public.
Oh totally - I’m giving the cliff notes version of it, but it’s so evil. My lawyer friend who also hates Disn3y had sent me the links to read. I was appalled, but also not surprised.
Oh my god? That’s horrible. It’s giving McDonald’s and that poor woman who experienced third degree burns on her groin and legs due to their coffee that was WAY too hot. They also dragged her name when she sued and presented it like she was ridiculous when it was 100% their fault (watch the documentary Hot Coffeee if anyone is curious). These large corporations absolutely suck and so do the people who encourage others to support them like TBP.
Oh exactly! Her lab!a was FUSED together she was so badly burned.
And also I have seen the smartest people with multiple university degrees hold hot coffee under their chin, in between legs, etc. Hot is one thing, scalding is another. McDonald’s & Disn3y both support genocide and toomany other horrible things to mention. It’s literally time to cancel them along with all these stupid influencers (and their circles of affiliate code groupies).
I think it’s absolutely ridiculous it’s in the terms and they will do anything to avoid a payout
BUT from my understanding this isn’t the whole story. It happened at a restaurant that has nothing to do with Disney. It’s renting a spot in Disney Springs and that’s the only affiliation. In this case, he should be going after the restaurant, not Disney IMO
Also to add I cannot imagine losing a loved one in this way and somebody should absolutely pay but if he doesn’t go after the right people it could get dismissed. 50K is nothing to Disney, easy enough to pay it but could get dismissed since it happened at an independent restaurant in Downtown Disney. I would hope the terms and conditions don’t hold up if it was on their property or in one of their owned restaurants.
