If I have a home server connected to Proton Drive for example, would that be sufficient to back up my data?

Maybe using Syncthing or MPD? I'm searching something to keep/share my votes or even maybe listen counts for desktop and mobile. Also it would be nice to create a backup for these data.

TL;DR: How do you sort your books for your book server?

I'm thinking of reworking my eBook/comic/etc library, and I'm curious how other people structure things.

I don't want to separate fiction out by genre or anything since some can fit multiple genres, so I'm leaning towards Dewey decimal system categories personally.

I'm also planning a bit ahead since my daughter is now starting to read more than sight words books, so I'm thinking of separating kids fiction and adult fiction.

I also currently have a section for comics, manga, and LNs. Those are separated mostly for who goes to what, and what they do/don't want to read. So my library right now (plus the kids section) will look like:

• Adult Fiction
• Comics
• Manga
• Light/Web Novels
• Non-Fiction

Simple for navigation, and searchable, but maybe not the best for browsing. So I was thinking maybe the Dewey categories:

• Computer Science, Knowledge, and Systems

• Social Sciences
• Language
• Science
• Technology
• Arts
• Adult Fiction
• Kids Fiction
• History/Geography

Nicely browsable, but some of those sections will be really light on books.

What method of sorting do you use? Any librarians out there with thoughts on better approaches than the Dewey decimal system?

I want my self hosted things to use https. For example, I have Jellyfin installed via docker, and I want it to use https instead of http.

I don't care about necessarily doing this the "right" way, as I won't be making Jellyfin or any other service public, and will only be using it on my local network.

What is the easiest way to do this? Assume everything I host is in docker. Also a link to a tutorial would be great.

My setup exists of one local server that basically hosts Jellyfin and an arr stack. I only access this server locally with PC, TV and phone, however I might setup a Wireguard based remote access in the future.

Should I use a reverse proxy like Caddy so I can access the different containers with a local domain name like jellyfin.myserver.local?

I am also interested in hosting Adguard home but how can this work together with Caddy, won't they both conflict as a DNS server?

I appreciate any possible advice on these topics.

I have an unused Raspberry Pi 4 (2GB model) lying around and I would like to install OpenWRT on it and use it as a router. I get Internet from DSL so I can't hook it up on the Raspberry Pi directly, I need to plug an Ethernet cable coming from my actual router to the Pi.

I am no expert on networking, so please forgive me if I say something that is wrong. I want the WAN coming in from the router from the Pi's Ethernet port, and the LAN coming out as Wi-Fi. I may also stick an additional Ethernet adapter to it in the future. I have tried doing this many times and have failed. So, could anyone explain to me how could I do this?

Also, what are VLANs, what are their uses and if I wanted one, how could I setup it in OpenWRT?

I am an embedded systems guy so this is new territory for me. I want to be able to host my own userbase somewhere, mainly I just want to figure out how they work. But all i can find are closed solutions that have some amount of pricing or are obscured. I also feel like it'd be wrong to re-write something like this myself.

I've tried googling around a bit but keep getting similar results so I am assuming I am asking the wrong question. What I want: Ideally some kind of dockerized setup where a user can navigate to a website to create an account, which I can then query through php or some other API. Stuff like password reset or stripe would be nice but is secondary as that can most likely be added another way.

I found stuff like usernbase which seems interesting and even includes something like subscriptions, but I'd like to self host it and not rely on something like the AWS.

Ideally I want to get OAUTH2.0 to work as well, to learn how exactly it works.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

I've started pushing backups of media important to me (family pictures, video etc) to backblaze with client-side encryption.

However, are they a reliable storage provider? I can't help but compare them to something like Amazon who likely has a better chance of maintaining my files but they are so expensive that I don't even bother.

What do you think? Yes, I've heard of 3-2-1, however for now I only have backblaze and a local backup. I'm trying not to spend too much on this.

I host a nextcloud instance, a NAS, and a few content portals for things like ebooks and music (internal only). I'll be migrating Smartthings to Home Assistant eventually. We're going to be upgrading to fiber soon and I have the opportunity to rebuild my wife's network with a long term outlook (we'll likely be here for years). Currently we have an older eero mesh system over cable internet. My desk is right where the cable currently comes in so all my Ethernet devices can live near the router.

My question is this:

What am I missing out on as a self-hoster by using whatever equipment metronet gives me?

What am I missing out on as a regular internet user by using the default equipment.

Am I likely to be annoyed about where the fiber comes into the house?

If it makes sense to buy my own router or access point(s), what is a reasonable balance between "daddy Bezos please read all my emails" and "you'll never be secure until you build a router from custom circuit boards you custom ordered and hand assembled in a secure area".

I'd like to avoid complex configuration, but if I can surface advanced options when needed, that would be great.

I'm thinking of picking up an old HP Microserver (gen8) and was wondering if it is a bad idea from a security standpoint.

I mean it's only 10 years old - is there any exploit or something like that?

What about a N36L Microserver?

I'd probably run Debian headless on it.

I'd only use it for Syncthing and as a backup NAS.

I’ve been using the CarFAX Car Care app/website for a long time but I’m looking for something better.

It would be nice to have something I can enter my car make/model into and have it suggest maintenance but also keep track of repairs. I like uploading PDF scans of receipts too; one thing that always bothered me about Car Care is the horrible, weird compression it does on those files.

I'm in desparate need of setting up borgmatic for borg backup. I would like to encrypt my backups. (I suppose, an unencrypted backup is better than none in my case, so I should get it done today regardless.)

How do I save those keys? Is there a directory structure I follow? Do you backup the keys as well? Are there keys that I need to write down by hand? Should I use a cloud service like bitwarden secrets manager? Could I host something?

Im ignorant on this matter. The most I've done is add ssh keys to git forges and use ssh-copyid. But I've always been able to access what I need to without keeping those (I login to the web interface.) Can you share with me best practices or what you do to manage non-password secrets?

Should be easy to use, remember what I bought before and propose things that are probably running out (based on my personal buying frequency), and allow sharing the list between multiple people. Ideally also allow adding recipes for meals that I cook often.

I have many ebooks I have from scouring the Internet in two formats: epub and PDF. I want something server like that lets me drop read them from any device on my local network and remembers where I left the book on device and let's me continue on another. I want the client app to have android and Linux support while the server should run on linux. Is there anything out there? Bonus points if it autographs metadata from the internet and organises them by topics, authors, ddc etc.

TLDR: An ebook library running on a Linux server with Android and Linux client software.

I was using DaRemote only available on Google Play Store, to do that. Recently there was an option to download it and pay it directly to the dev.

Hello! I have jellyfin+qbittorrent+radarr on my home server, but I can't make it work with hardlinks. When a download finishes, it just copies it to the /movie folder, doubling the disk space. at least, I think that it's just a copy, because the disk space is double and find ./downloads -samefile ./movies/path/to/file.mkv returns no result, meaning if I understand correctly that file.mkv is not hardlinked to any file in the download folder (but it should).

HDD1 hard drive is formatted ext4, that supports hardlinks (in fact I can create them manually), and in the radarr settings the checkbox "use hardlinks instead of copy" is checked.

Ideally I'd prefer softlinks instead of hadlinks, but I don't think there's a way to do it natively, I think I'd need an external script

I had everything working fine for a while, and suddenly all my indexes have stopped working I get the error : " unable to connect to indexer. Connection refused (127.0.0.1:8080)"

The 127.0.0.1:8080 is not the address where my CasaOS is I don't know why it want to connect to that one or if it has something to do with the error. As I said it was working before like for 2 months I didn't change anything in the setting.
