!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

How would a company decide that something should be “legitimate interest” vs “consent”?

EDIT: Definition of "Legitimate Interest", when hovering over the question mark.

How does legitimate interest work?

Some vendors are not asking for your consent, but are using your personal data on the basis of their legitimate interest.

Secondarily, should the fan be outside or inside the window?

Asking for a friend. (Me, help. I can’t remember physics, it’s too goddamn hot)

Edit: I’ve opened all the windows and set up a fan a short distance from the window pointing out and it’s reduced the temperature to near-tolerable levels. Unfortunately, venting through the attic was a no-go but moving things aside might make it an option next time. Thank you all, I appreciate the help!

I managed to bag a Lenovo Thinkpad T440 for quite cheap as a replacement to my old laptop and I've been wondering about upgrading it.

Problem is the T440 is quite hostile when it comes to upgrading, unlike the T440p. Replacing, for example, the CPU is basically impossible as it's soldered directly to the board. And so I've been thinking about something stupid a.k.a. replacing the motherboard entirely with a T440s board, which has a better CPU soldered onto it.

In theory the two boards should have the same dimensions and should be interchangeable, but does anyone know if that's actually the case? I couldn't find much about this kind of swap online, so I thought asking here would be a good idea.

Maybe we should just start nuking the most densely packed cities/countries. Sorry NYC, Tokyo, and basically all of India.

But would this not solve the problem?

Anyone have a list of active sports shorts comms? I was just trying to find some, but even nfl@lemmy.world was barren.

I am trying to make a decision. curious about your thoughts on my personal situation, and what you think in general. or your own stories if you have anything relevant...

The first programs were written in binary/hexadecimal, and only later did we invent coding languages to convert between human readable code and binary machine code.

So why can't we just do the same thing in reverse? I hear a lot about devices from audio streaming to footware rendered useless by abandonware. Couldn't a very smart person (or AI) just take the existing program and turn it into code?

Youtube Channel SaveAFox, previously a channel about like, a fox sanctuary that showed cute footage of the foxes to get more donors, got hacked today.

It is now full of videos claiming to be from SpaceX and Elon Musk's ugly mug.

Thing is

It's not the first channel I've seen being hacked, nor is it the first to get that exact type of content spammed into it. Linus Tech Tips got hacked some time back (honestly I don't remember how long ago, but I was already on Lemmy, so it was within the past year and change) and it had that exact type of stuff before LMG took it back.

And there was another random channel that I saw suffer the same fate some months before LTT.

My question is -- Why Elon Musk? Why SpaceX/Tesla? Is Musk himself paying people to build zombie farms for him? I wouldn't put it past him but at the same time he has the funds to not need that kind of tactic -- He could astroturf by more "legit-looking" means.

Is it just because people who like Musk are more likely to fall for scams?

Idk, found myself wondering that.

I am one of the many Lemy converts from the reddit exodus to give context of my experience using Lemy. I exclusively use the sync app for Android.

In my eary days here I was shocked to find how much content was in languages other than english. I can usually manage with posts that are links to articles by having them open in browser and use a translating extension.

However I was wondering if there were any ways to have the content only available in the sync app to be translated?

Fuck it'd be awesome if on my zfold multiwindow function to even have the native language in sync with the translated version in another window to let me pick up on some of the other language's commonly words and phrases. But I'd be happy with just being able to read their English translations.

I'm using the web UI, whenever I visit a thread the server "remember" it and mark it specially when new comments are added. Like this:

Is there a way to disable this behaviour, marking the whole thread as unread? Better if it can be done to a given post.

Do we really don't have anything older before it that counts as a paid service/job being registered?

Onn needs a Google account. Fire stick requires an Amazon account. Apple tv, obviously an Apple account. PS5, Xbox all the same.

Is there a box that will let me stream Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, my own stored media?

Osmc is great for home stuff, but can't do Hulu Netflix.

I could use a Linux PC, but not as simple as 1 remote for a cheaper box top.

Any suggestions? Or do I just get a Linux host

I have important people in Poland but I can't speak polish and I'm not in the EU.

In the past I've failed at calling local flower shops then bank transferring the money. Things are lost in translation and it's been awkward 2 out of 2 times now.

There must be some middleman I can use. I could ask the recipient in question but I want it to be a surprise obviously.

Any ideas?

The theory, which I probably misunderstand because I have a similar level of education to a macaque, states that because a simulated world would eventually develop to the point where it creates its own simulations, it's then just a matter of probability that we are in a simulation. That is, if there's one real world, and a zillion simulated ones, it's more likely that we're in a simulated world. That's probably an oversimplification, but it's the gist I got from listening to people talk about the theory.

But if the real world sets up a simulated world which more or less perfectly simulates itself, the processing required to create a mirror sim-within-a-sim would need at least twice that much power/resources, no? How could the infinitely recursive simulations even begin to be set up unless more and more hardware is constantly being added by the real meat people to its initial simulation? It would be like that cartoon (or was it a silent movie?) of a guy laying down train track struts while sitting on the cowcatcher of a moving train. Except in this case the train would be moving at close to the speed of light.

Doesn't this fact alone disprove the entire hypothesis? If I set up a 1:1 simulation of our universe, then just sit back and watch, any attempts by my simulant people to create something that would exhaust all of my hardware would just... not work? Blue screen? Crash the system? Crunching the numbers of a 1:1 sim within a 1:1 sim would not be physically possible for a processor that can just about handle the first simulation. The simulation's own simulated processors would still need to have their processing done by Meat World, you're essentially just passing the CPU-buck backwards like it's a rugby ball until it lands in the lap of the real world.

And this is just if the simulated people create ONE simulation. If 10 people in that one world decide to set up similar simulations simultaneously, the hardware for the entire sim realty would be toast overnight.

What am I not getting about this?

Cheers!

Of course, I'd do all the obvious things, such as getting a bigger house, a newer car, and quitting work, but beyond that, I have no interest in an extravagant lifestyle—or at least that's what I tell myself.

By a bigger house, I mean one typical of upper-middle-class living. I've watched plenty of videos of people touring million-dollar mansions, and they all look too big, open, and sterile to me. I've seen cozier tiny homes than those. And by a newer car, I mean a 2017 model or so instead of the 2007 one I drive now.

Really, give me a nice cottage by the lake with some land and a big garage for all my tools and toys, and I'm all set. I much prefer the idea of "hidden wealth" over showing it off. I'm just kind of worried that I wouldn't be able to live up to my own expectations if push comes to shove, and there's really no way of testing that. Am I just kidding myself here?

I feel the same way about fame. Many people aspire to become successful YouTubers or such, but the idea of people recognizing me on the street sounds awful.

I went to college a long time ago. Since then the LHC verified the higgs boson. The higgs field and the higgs bubbles that separated quarks from antiquarks is something I've been looking at.

However I never took quantum mechanics and have little understanding of quantum fields. I would like to rectify that problem.

Can someone with knowledge give me a push in the right direction.... What books to start with, are there online lectures?

Thank you
