i was wondering about that, i mean technically it could be considered the last war because it was before the modern era (1900) and yes,i know about world war and etc but what i mean is that the mexican-american war was the last one that didn't have a lot of planning into it, similar to wars in the older days,,like there was no system control back then or like radio so technically, while not true, could it be considered "the last war of humanity"?

This revolutionary infertility treatment is now responsible for about 2% of all births in the US annually. Plus, the live birth rate for IVF cycles has been getting steadily better over the years – roughly tripling for women under 38 since the early 1990s, according to UK data. In the US, the number of live births resulting from assisted reproductive technology – IVF accounts for 99% of such procedures – are 1.6 times higher in 2020 than they were a decade earlier.

And yet the live birth rate, per embryo transfer cycle, for women aged 35 or so is still just 30% in the UK and 39% in the US. In women of all ages, only 45% of embryo transfer cycles led to a live birth in the US, although that has grown from 36% in 2011.

It is clear that an IVF cycle is still a long, agonising roll of the dice.

Meanwhile, IVF remains gruelling for those who find themselves going through it. Multiple cycles, each one often costing thousands, can end in failure. Women inject themselves with drugs for weeks at a time, endure painful surgical procedures, while the emotional toll on couples can be severe enough to end relationships.

Scientists around the world are trying to help by working on techniques that might improve the odds of success. While there are many interwoven reasons for why IVF treatment can fail, it is possible that other interventions could make a difference. And they might transform the lives of millions.

"I'm trying to protect my tent from the rainwater because we are expecting heavy rain. Three days ago when it rained, we were drenched," Siam said, seeking to shield his children and grandchildren from more wet weather. Siam is among thousands sheltering at Gaza City's Yarmuk sports stadium in the north

He lives in one of many flimsy tents set up at the stadium, where the pitch has become a muddy field dotted with puddles left by rainfall that washed away belongings and shelters. People in the stadium dug small trenches around their tents, covered them with plastic sheets, and did whatever they could to stop the water from entering their makeshift homes. Others used spades to direct the water into drains, as grey skies threatened more rain.

International aid organisations have sounded the alarm about the deteriorating situation as winter approaches. "It's going to be catastrophic," warned Louise Wateridge, an emergency officer for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees currently in Gaza. "People don't have anything that they need," she said from Gaza City. "They haven't had basic, basic, basic things for 13 months, not food, not water, not shelter," she added. "It's going to be miserable, it's going to be very desperate."

The rainy period in Gaza lasts between late October and April, with January being the wettest month, averaging 30 to 40 millimetres of rain. Winter temperatures can drop as low as six degrees Celsius (42 Fahrenheit). Recent rain has flooded hundreds of tents near the coast in Deir el-Balah, in central Gaza, as well as in Khan Yunis and Rafah in the south, according to Gaza's civil defence.

Auni al-Sabea, living in a tent in Deir el-Balah, was among those bearing the brunt of the weather without proper accommodation. "The rain and seawater flooded all the tents. We are helpless. The water took everything from the tent, including the mattresses, blankets and a water jug. We were only able to get a mattress and blankets for the children," said the displaced man. "Now, we are in the street and we have nothing left," said the 40-year-old from Al-Shati Camp.

Only five EU states – Belgium, Latvia, France, Estonia and Cyprus – were in favour of a resolution adopted by the UN general assembly in September that demanded Israel end “its unlawful presence” in the occupied territories of Palestine within 12 months. Bulgaria, Austria, Sweden, Italy and Germany abstained.

There has been a notable shift in the position of EU leaders since then.

Some European states such as France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and the UK have reduced arms sales to Israel. But despite these policies, there is no EU arms ban on Israel. In fact, Germany provides one-third of Israel’s arms, and has even increased these exports in the second half of 2024.

Yet in July 2024, the court said that states are “under an obligation not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by Israel’s illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”. This should arguably not only involve an EU ban on arms sales to Israel, but also a suspension of the EU’s trade agreement with Israel. Ireland and Spain have been pushing for the latter, but no decision has yet been taken.

the recent arrest warrants are likely to have a powerful indirect effect.(...) So, EU states that continue to provide arms to Israel are arguably complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

And even if the EU government itself does not ban arms sales, citizens can ask their own courts to enforce such a ban. This type of case is already occuring in the Netherlands.

EU states are firmly in agreement that only a two-state solution will increase the chances of security and peace in the region.

Foreign ministers from the DRC and Rwanda approved a concept of operations – a strategy under which Rwandan troops will disengage from Congolese territory, Angola's foreign ministry said. A previous draft of the plan in August set out the dismantling of a militia created by former ethnic Hutu leaders involved in the Rwandan genocide in 1994 as a precondition for Rwanda withdrawing its troops.

Often portrayed by Rwanda as a threat to its security, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda is one of several militias fighting alongside the Congolese armed forces against forces from the M23 group which is alleged to have backing from Rwanda.

Since 2021, the M23 has seized swathes of the eastern DRC, displacing thousands and creating a humanitarian crisis. In August, Angola mediated a truce that stabilised the situation at the front line. But since the end of October, reports have emerged of ceasefire violations. Earlier this month, officials from the DRC and Rwanda started a committee – chaired by Angolan diplomats – to monitor the skirmishes.

The violence in North Kivu is driven by complex rivalries along ethnic, religious and political lines – with Rwanda and Uganda accused of backing rebel groups to expand their influence and gain access to valuable resources in eastern DRC. About six million people have been killed by fighting in the region since 1996, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in global history.

A report commissioned by the UN Security Council found that between 3,000 to 4,000 Rwandan soldiers were fighting alongside the M23 rebels in North Kivu, with Kigali exercising “de facto” control over the group's operations.

Analysts warn that failure to adequately address the conflict may cause massive instability in central and East Africa that could pave the way for Chinese or Russian involvement and further expansion of Islamist terrorists. The UN has also highlighted alarming levels of violence against civilians, and particularly against women and girls.

26.11.2024 Liebes Tagebuch...

I don't know about you but I like to sketch in my journal.

I will simply sketch anything that grabs my attention or that I want to remember, no matter how insignificant it can be. To keep a visual record.

I sketched that electronic thermometer the day after I had an infection and my temp reached some worrying level, while I was still recovering at home (the temperature reached 39.7 C, approx 103F, and when I called her the following day to inform her of what happened, my doctor was very unhappy I did not call her immediately 0:p)

Pen and ink sketch of an electronic thermometer

I have no particular skills and zero illusion to ever become a professional artist, mind you. And that's fine with me. I have fun sketching (and painting) and, later, while I browse the pages of my journal I will often have fun looking at those silly sketches. Often, not always ;)

Watercolors of a greyish cup of coffee with large white dots

Someday I will sketch plenty unrelated stuff. While other days I won't sketch anything. And that's probably the one thing I would love to be more consistant at—sketching at least once a day.

A spread containing various sketches: an old polaroid, a stack of batteries, some magnifying glasses and a bright orange mushroom with whit cruft-thingies all over the top

What about you?

Do you sketch in your journal too? Or do you do any other kind of visual stuff, just for the fun/joy of doing them, or for some other reason? Decorate your journal maybe?

Are there stuff you would like to improve?

For example, I would love to get better at doing nice page layout in my journal. We can see so many gorgeous examples online, whereas mine are, well, blocky at best.

As an example of great visual journals, if you don't know him already, you might want to check Danny Gregory's YT channels, and probably read one (any) of his books: https://www.youtube.com/@SketchBookSkool and https://www.youtube.com/@DannyGregory

As for his books, the first one I would suggest must be 'The Creative License', closely followed by 'Everyday Matters'.
