Thank you for this beautiful app!

I have a minor issue I cannot seem to resolve - the upvote/downvote count vanishes immediately after reloading the page. I am using Librewolf (that is based on Firefox) and I have tried to disable uBlock Origin entirely but I can't get it to display correctly. Anyone else ran into this and found a solution? Thanks!

Image attached how it looks for me.

Today's game is Silent Hill 2 Remake. I've been wanting to play this for a long time ever since i heard it was getting a remake. I was a bit worried about how it would perform on my Steam Deck, but everything seems to be going well. I haven't checked any average FPS but i have it capped at 30 and i am using FSR on balanced at 1600x900. There's some minor but noticeable stuttering, but at least up until the town it runs well. I want to spend this post more talking about the game itself, so i'm going to keep the screenshots light for this one.

The whole game looks pretty and is both fun and terrifying. Recent years must be a golden age for Horror Games or something because first Alan Wake II and then this (and from what i hear the RE4 remake is up there too). It's also funny to me that all these 2 game franchises involve a plot of a run of the mill Middle Aged Guy looking for their Wife (or at least Alan Wake I Alan).

I also i find this game amazing because, as someone who grew up in a Small American Town like this, they perfectly captured the feel of one. The way the streets are, the way the Street Lights are, the creepy alleys between houses. It all eerily reminds me of home. Silent Hill is a bit upper class then where i grew up, but it still strikes those chords uncomfortably well.

Specifically this shot:

And this shot:

Show what i mean.

On top of the town itself, the game manages to scare me really well. The fog leaves me on the edge of my seat, and the lying figures that crawl around terrify me. Something about them just really bothers me.

Other than starting Silent Hill 2, i also finished my crushing difficulty run of Uncharted 4. It was Brutal. The final boss could basically one shot me most of the time, which made it a challenge of perfectly parrying his attacks. It was a fun challenge to be sure. I wanted to share a few more screenshots from that. I'm not fully done (I need to get a journal entry and 6 more treasures, along with the speedrunning achievement), and plus i'm considering playing The Lost Legacy after SH2. so this may not be the last screenshot from it.

I don't want to draw the post out too long though so i'm just going to leave a few screenshots from that here:

Russia is ready to carry out cyber attacks on the United Kingdom and other allies in a bid to weaken support for Ukraine, a senior minister will warn later.

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden, whose role includes responsibility for national security, is set to tell a Nato meeting that the Kremlin could target British businesses and leave millions without power. It is the latest in a series of warnings about the cyber-warfare capabilities of Russia, which McFadden is to call a "hidden war" being waged against Ukraine.

He is also expected to single-out Russia's Unit 29155, which the government says has carried out a number of attacks in the UK and Europe.

AbstractThis study evaluates the relationship between social media usage and state sad and anxious mood in a sample of young adults (N = 670) in the years 2019 through 2021 using cross-sectional, experimental, and ecological momentary assessment approaches. In our cross-sectional data, objectively measured usage of Instagram and Twitter was not associated with state sad or anxious mood after adjusting for multiple comparisons. We used an experimental design to test the effect of low versus high acute social media usage on state mood and did not find an effect of time spent using social media on state sad or anxious mood. In our ecological momentary assessment sample, participants reported their time spent on social media and state sad and anxious mood six times per day over 7 days, and we found a weak, positive, bidirectional relationship between social media usage and state sad and anxious mood. In this study, evidence for a relationship between social media usage and sad and anxious mood was inconsistent, and effects were small in magnitude. Time spent on social media sites may be less important for mood than other aspects of social media usage, such as the type of content accessed.

Summary from the 404 media newsletter

Heart cockles, a group of marine molluscs, contain little communities of algae in their shells as part of a symbiotic relationship; the algae get shelter and protection, and the cockles get algae-processed nutrients.

Now, scientists have discovered that cockle shells have a host of mind-boggling adaptations to keep these algae happy, including windows that offer “the first example of fiber optic cable bundles in a living creature.”

“We show that the fibrous prismatic crystals act like parallel bundles of fiber optic cables in the shell windows, not just transmitting light but projecting high-resolution images through the window,” that have “a resolution of >100 lines/mm,” said researchers led by Dakota McCoy of the University of Chicago.

From the article in the link above:

Fig. 1: Heart cockles (Corculum cardissa and Corculum spp.) are asymmetrical, photosymbiotic bivalves.

Fig. 2: Transparent windows allow heart cockle shells to transmit 11–62% of photosynthetically active radiation (mean = 31%) and significantly screen out UV radiation (mean = 14%, range = 5–28%).
