I think the original picture is enough evidence that it could easily be misinterpreted, regardless of any other circumstances. It's not immediately self-evident.

I should have known going into it, but Sam Rami made Multiverse of Madness into his own weird thing that was tonally just not what I wanted, which was a bummer.

I just mean that there's no reason to assume anything. Take the story at its literal face value, because that is the only evidence that exists. It is absolutely telling that they fail to list the most salient reason to say no, but there are so many reasons why that might be the case that it's useless to speculate.
