Yes, all true, and don’t forget the mild climate that allows us to spend significantly less on heating and cooling. On a typical day, or over a month in summer, California uses only about half the electricity that Texas does, even with the larger population and bigger economy.

But don’t get the wrong impression. Colder northern states can be just as good, or better, equipped to deploy solar. Solar panels work best when it’s sunny and cold. Heat drops their efficiency. Also, all those midwestern states are going with wind power in a big way, and with their established drilling industries are uniquely positioned to move to deep geothermal rather than extracting oil and gas.

This is that year for California. Except for January, renewables produced more than fossil fuels. We’ll probably end with renewables producing more than fossil fuels for the whole year.

The “White Dudes for Harris” groups raised more than $4 million over a Zoom call that featured the likes of “The Dude” Jeff Bridges, *Star Wars *legend Mark Hamill, and Mark Ruffalo gabbing with Pritzker and a pre-VP pick Gov. Tim Walz.

Former President Donald Trump also has some groups trying to target various demographics, including a $20 million “Send the Vote” effort backed by podcast hosts the Nelk Boys and former Trump aide Taylor Budowich.

Mmhmm.

Truss has become vocal on US politics, last month addressing Republican supporters and urging them to learn lessons from her brief time in No 10. She said: “I’ve learned how powerful the unelected bureaucracy is. You have to win in November … you have to dismantle the leftist state … they are devious, they are ruthless and they are out to get you.”

I don’t see how she’s qualified to say jack shit about US politics.

Old person mentality: smartphones are expensive and food is cheap.

I don’t feel that one’s even halfway earned. I don’t hate my fellow man, not even when he’s tiresome, surly, and tries to cheat at poker. I figure that’s just the human material, and he that finds in it cause for anger or dismay is a fool for expecting better.

“Our top story tonight, the Shell Arctic EZ-Bake heatwave, now in its third week, shows no signs of letting up.”

Nothing about the 1995 Dredd movie? What makes a cult classic is highly subjective, but I think it should be hard to find. Makes the hunt more fun. I found out very recently that Big Trouble in Little China is not really available on streaming services. I bought the blu-ray.

I just got my first bill since going to a community choice power provider. Here in California, the investor owned utilities (commercial companies, not the publicly-owned utilities) act as retailers of energy. They buy power on the open market from generators, then sell it to their customers. They bill both for the cost to generate the power, and also for power delivery (which includes maintaining the grid). An option that recently became available is for a city government to join a community choice power provider, which then buys power from generators on our behalf. The utility still delivers it, so it’s not real competition, but partway there. The community choice provider then bills the utility, who passes that bill along to individual customers.

So, the generation cost went down by about 30% for power used during the day, and a few percent for power delivered at night (three different time-of-use categories). Our community choice provider has an option for 100% renewable power, which I chose, so this is a pretty tangible demonstration that renewable power really is cheaper than fossil fuels.
