Intent is defined as intention or purpose. So I'll rephrase for you: the purpose of playing a FPS is to play a game. The purpose of playing GTA is to play a game.

The purpose of AI generated CSAM is to watch children being abused.

This guy did do something - he either created or accessed AI generated CSAM.

The idea that Sunak has any sort of political weight is fucking hilarious.

West Kennet Long Barrow is a Neolithic barrow over 5,500 years old. It's part of the numerous neolithic structures in Wiltshire, UK (which includes the frankly far less impressive but more famous Stonehenge).

Going inside it is a very odd feeling. You can see and touch ancient work marks put there by people who are so remote to us we know very little about them. I've visited numerous ancient world heritage sites and its unique (to me) in how close you feel to those people.

The Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian - yes, I know there's been a movie (Master & Commander with Russel Crowe and Paul Bettany) but the series is much richer and deeper than any single movie could be.

Also, Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings series. Concentrate on the Fitz storyline, maybe give the Liveship series a miss.

As it absolutely should be. Everyone knows its nothing to do with talking to their god and everything to do with intimidating people.

And if the christians object ask them why they're suddenly concerned that prayers only work within 150m of the person they're praying 'for'.

Not yet, but they're certainly in our thinking for next year :)

This is great news :) but without wanting to be spammy the org I am a member of !globalorderofsatan@lemmy.blahaj.zone have been running a very similar campaign but for non-mainstream music e.g. metal/punk/indie/alt/industrial/goth that we call "Satan Not Hatin'"

It currently has over 140 opt-in participants of bands, individual artists, venues, festivals, record labels and other orgs from all over the world, including the UK and has been so successful that a well known (within metal circles) documentarian and music video director is currently making a Documentary about the campaign. You can visit the campaign website where we list all the participants and provide more detail - there's also a link to a YouTube playlist of all the participating bands which also works fine in Invidious!

I have contacted the Graun about Satan Not Hatin' but mainstream news has little love for alternative music so we'll carry on with our DIY approach!

Could be yeah. Very weird how it just started happening though. As far as I'm aware nothing on the websites has changed and I haven't updated LW in the last week or so.

in 2018, Facebook told Vox that it doesn't use private messages for ad targeting. But a few months later, The New York Times, citing "hundreds of pages of Facebook documents," reported that Facebook "gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages."

Surprising? No. Appalling? Yes.

As per title really. I need a backup solution for backing up my home directory to an external USB drive that;

  1. I can schedule to run x times per week
  2. Encrypts the contents (into an encrypted zip file is fine)
  3. Puts the encrypted backup onto an external USB drive
  4. Keeps the last x amount of backups.

I've found loads that can do one or more of these things but not all of them. I really like LuckyBackup for example but it doesn't encrypt. I just want something I can set and forget.

System is LMDE 6 (Faye).

A couple of weeks ago there was a post on how to identify bands that are dodgy or straight up awful people. Here's a few links to help with that.

  1. The Is it fash: the musical Facebook Group. Yeah, it's FB which isn't great but this is an active group of over 5k people, some of whom work with musicians and labels, who can provide accurate info. You need to request access.

  2. Do You Hear The People Scream One Drive document. This is a list which is mostly up to date in a OneDrive Word doc of bands considered explicitly anti-fascist

  3. Black Metal Bands And Their Politics | Bypass IP restriction. A list of rated Black Metal bands with the categories; Fascist, Sketchy, Not Very Sketchy, Not Sketchy, Leftist/Anti-fascist

  4. Black Metal Bands To Avoid And Their Politics | Bypass IP restriction. Similar to the above, but better sourced.

  5. Antifascist Black Metal YouTube Channel | On Piped | On Invidious. A channel that promotes and features explicitly anti-fascist, non problematic black metal (and other genres)

"Protesters who wear masks could face arrest, up to a month in jail and a £1,000 fine under proposed measures that human rights campaigners claim are pandering to “culture war nonsense”.

Police in England and Wales will be given the power to arrest people if they are wearing face coverings at specific demonstrations, the Home Office has said."

Been a bad 18 months or so for privacy in the UK. Online Safety Bill passed, the right to take strike action curtailed, people in receipt of benefits (including disabled people) will soon (as from 2025) have their bank accounts open to the government, the right to protest curtailed and now this.

From their Masto acct:

"It’s almost #DataPrivacyWeek - vote now for your favorite data privacy tools in this 1-minute survey! "

The link goes to this users Mastodon post on the subject. I'm going to copy part of the text of his post without having to post the Threads post they were shown. Click through if you want to see for yourself, avoid if such things are upsetting to you.

"This was a post promoted to me from within Instagram to try and get me to use threads. Ill say that again: this is the promotional content shown to non-threads users as an inducement to join threads."

If you do click through to the Mastodon thread, you'll see several other people confirming they've seen the same or similar posts promoting Threads.

I've said the same thing in comments to other Threads related posts in this community but I'm going to say it again; didn't we create and use fediverse software like Mastodon, Lemmy, PixelFed etc in large part to escape the constant hate-baiting and algorithmic manipulation of companies like Meta? Why are so many in the fediverse prepared to throw their fellow fediverse users under the bus by exposing them to a company and a set of users who not only say these things and not only allow them to be said but actually use them as a promotional tool to encourage more people onto Threads?

If Threads was a fediverse instance, it would've been defederated from by just about everyone by now. Why are some people bending over backwards to give Meta a free pass?

'Wait and see' I hear people say. I can already see.
