West Kennet Long Barrow is a Neolithic barrow over 5,500 years old. It's part of the numerous neolithic structures in Wiltshire, UK (which includes the frankly far less impressive but more famous Stonehenge).

Going inside it is a very odd feeling. You can see and touch ancient work marks put there by people who are so remote to us we know very little about them. I've visited numerous ancient world heritage sites and its unique (to me) in how close you feel to those people.

We are delighted to welcome back our dear friends in Sweden, Satanistiska samfundet, as an official Order of Global Order of Satan after a hiatus of a couple of years. As the right-wing religious threat grows across Europe, Satanism in Sweden has seen an uptake in interest and after a surge in membership applications GOS Sweden are now ready to once again stand with us in active opposition. You can find them in the following places:

(side note - I'm hoping to get them active on the Fediverse too!).

The Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian - yes, I know there's been a movie (Master & Commander with Russel Crowe and Paul Bettany) but the series is much richer and deeper than any single movie could be.

Also, Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings series. Concentrate on the Fitz storyline, maybe give the Liveship series a miss.

As it absolutely should be. Everyone knows its nothing to do with talking to their god and everything to do with intimidating people.

And if the christians object ask them why they're suddenly concerned that prayers only work within 150m of the person they're praying 'for'.

[–] leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Not yet, but they're certainly in our thinking for next year :)

This is great news :) but without wanting to be spammy the org I am a member of !globalorderofsatan@lemmy.blahaj.zone have been running a very similar campaign but for non-mainstream music e.g. metal/punk/indie/alt/industrial/goth that we call "Satan Not Hatin'"

It currently has over 140 opt-in participants of bands, individual artists, venues, festivals, record labels and other orgs from all over the world, including the UK and has been so successful that a well known (within metal circles) documentarian and music video director is currently making a Documentary about the campaign. You can visit the campaign website where we list all the participants and provide more detail - there's also a link to a YouTube playlist of all the participating bands which also works fine in Invidious!

I have contacted the Graun about Satan Not Hatin' but mainstream news has little love for alternative music so we'll carry on with our DIY approach!

Could be yeah. Very weird how it just started happening though. As far as I'm aware nothing on the websites has changed and I haven't updated LW in the last week or so.

Two days ago, LW started behaving very oddly. It suddenly stopped rendering pages - but only on some sites. For example, the default Lemmy skin is fine but the Alexandrite skin is not. The BBC website doesn't work either. A few others seemingly totally random.

The domain resolves and it makes the initial connection and then it takes up to a minute of doing nothing and then just craps out, unable to render the page. Checking the Inspector reveals no errors or warnings and the network inspector is making a connection but not loading anything other than headers and basic tags.

The page presents no errors it just shows a blank screen. <html> <head> and <body> tags load but nothing else.

All these pages work fine in all other browsers I've tested in (floorp, Mullvad, vanilla FFox and Brave).

Details: LibreWolf 128.0-2 (flatpak) on LMDE (Faye).

Any clues, pointers or advice very gratefully received. I love the browser and have it set up just how I like it so don't really want to switch to another.

The same type of right-winger as JKR and EM now are used to accuse the Williams sisters of being men. The same type of right-winger JKR and EM now are used to accuse Michelle Obama of being a man.

Strange how its mostly always women of colour who have these utterly baseless accusations leveled at them by right-wingers like JKR and EM. And when I say 'strange' I mean its not strange at all and is deliberate.

The most annoying thing about the YT situation is that both the initial flag and the appeal we submitted weren't actually dealt with by a human. If they had been, they would've understood instantly we were describing what antivaxxers believe, not advocating for them!

The vast majority of the participants are not (as far as I'm aware) Satanists. Most of them didn't mention it at all, a couple said they were and a few explicitly said they weren't. We've had a lot of artists we approached not reply at all - which is fair, its hard work after all - and I suspect a lot of contacts didn't make it past their PR and/or management but out of all the approaches we've made, we've only had three explicitly say no. And that was because they weren't comfortable being associated with Satanism, which is again fair - its not for everyone.

Firstly, in an amusing turn of events YouTube removed the latest episode of GOSPod from their site. The reason? The episode - the subject of which was Satanic conspiracy theories - briefly mentioned the antivaxxers and YT said we were peddling medical misinformation. We appealed but nope. You can still hear the episode in all other places listed here.

Secondly, the S8N Not H8N campaign now has its own dedicated website as its was just getting too big (over 130 participants now) for one page on the main website to cut it. You can find that here: https://satan-not-hating.com and we also have launched socials for it too if you want to follow them:

Oh I'm sure the 'core bands are much better live than recorded - I haven't had chance to see LS yet but I will if they head over here.

Yeah, your comment about standing in a silent crowd watching a great party from a distance is exactly how I feel about stadium shows.

[–] leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I think (and this is just my personal opinion) - the 'core stuff sounds too overproduced if that makes sense? I like to hear a bit of feedback or fingers on the fretboard or just some example that shows me its being played by humans lol.

Its not terrible music by any means, despite what some of the more gatekeepy tyes say, and Will Ramos of Lorna Shore has a truly awesome vocal talent but it just all feels a bit...I dunno...lifeless and flat. I do like Worm Shepherd though of that subgenre, they're not afraid to slow it down a bit and put equal emphasis on the guitars as the drums and vocals.

Did you not get to see Accept then? Shame, they're awesome live.

[–] leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (4 children)

All those names I mentioned can still draw a massive crowd. Trouble is, they know it and set ticket prices accordingly. I also personally am not a fan of seeing bands in stadium sized arenas. If a venue is so big they need to erect huge TV screens you've kind of missed the point of seeing a live act IMO.

A lot of younger people (younger than me anyway, which is most people these days) seem to be getting into metal via deathcore. I know deathcore is not popular amongst metalheads but I don't really mind it. Its not exactly my thing but its OK. I see younger people going to see bands like Lorna Shore, Spiritbox, Slaughter to Prevail etc. There also seems to be a lot of post-black bands getting bigger here in the UK - Hundred Year Old Man, Ba'al, Hidden Mothers are all on the verge of something.

Should've opted for the Stewart timeline.

The far right, emboldened and enabled by political leaders such as Nigel Farage, are currently engaged in a wave of misinformation-driven violence that is in danger of engulfing the UK. See it for what it is - extremist thugs manipulating the totally unrelated murders of children to further their fascism.

They are using the tools of right wing social media outlets to organise and spread their misinformation and hate via the usual suspects - Tommy Robinson, Katie Hopkins, Andrew Tate, Elon Musk etc.

How can we fight back?

One way to effectively fight back is to support groups like Hope Not Hate and their 'Hold On To Hope' campaign: https://hopenothate.org.uk/hold-on-to-hope/ where you can sign up to lend support, keep abreast of developments and donate if you are able to.

If it is safe for you to do so, another way is to talk positively about multiculturalism on your social media presences and challenge the prejudices you encounter. This country was literally built by thousands of years of multiculturalism with hands and minds from many places and of many colours creating the very best of it. We must never let the far right deny that reality or allow their misinformation to gain a foothold.

EDIT: Here is a list of UK wide anti-racism protests being held this coming weekend: https://standuptoracism.org.uk/stop-the-far-right-national-day-of-protest-saturday-10th-august/

A member of our UK Order took time off from our own podcast (https://gospod.chat) to be interviewed on the Spiritually Incorrect podcast about Satanism and GOS. You can listen to the whole episode on their website (also contains links to other podcast supporting platforms).

On December 12, 2023, within the corridors of the Polish Parliament, a scandalous incident occurred, exemplifying extreme discrimination and a lack of respect for the freedom of conscience and religion. During the ceremonial lighting of Hanukkah candles, Member of Parliament Grzegorz Braun extinguished them using a fire extinguisher. Following the incident, Braun gave an interview to the tabloid Super Express, justifying his actions by claiming that “the act that took place in the Parliament was a religious act, deeply satanic in nature” and that “it would be a betrayal of his principles to tolerate and ignore Satanism.” Thus, in the view of the Global Order of Satan, Braun’s act resonated not only as anti-Semitic but also as anti-Satanic. For this reason, one of the members of our community has filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office, citing a justified suspicion of committing a crime under Article 196 of the Penal Code(commonly referred to as ‘the insult to religious feelings’) to the detriment of one of our members.

Satanists on the island of Ireland! Talk has recently started about the creation of an Order for you. If you're interested in guiding that discussion and/or joining the potential Order, please head to our International Discord server and when filling out the Discord access application, mention your interest and we can add you to the appropriate Channel.#Ireland #eire #northernireland #UK #satanism #satanic #atheism

So, as well as subbed to this Community, I'm also moderator of !globalorderofsatan@lemmy.blahaj.zone which is a Community for an atheistic Satanist organisation I'm a member of.

We recently (re)launched our Satan Not Hatin' campaign which we're running to try and tackle the incidents of hate (racism, homophobia, transphobia and Nazi shit etc) that sadly some metal bands put out. The campaign isn't just for metal bands, we also cover punk/goth/industrial/alt/indie too but the emphasis is metal bands. It's early days, but it'll continue to grow.

If you'd like to read more and see how you can help (if you'd like to) please visit the page or if you want to skip straight to the music, there's a playlist on YouTube | Invidious | Piped.

It seems possible that Brave are building Brave Pro, which looks like its a subscription based service of some kind. A note on the Android implementation of the project reads (GitHub link):

"Implement the required runtime changes (profile settings, chrome flags, group policies, etc.) with the appropriate values that enable the Brave Pro experience. Using Brave in this mode with its default settings and making changes to the Brave Pro defaults require an active paid subscription.

When the browser has no active credentials for Brave Pro, the panel UI will promote the service and include the initial payment CTA. When credentials are present the panel UI will include the appropriate toggles for making changes to the default settings."

It also links to a private Google Doc.

in 2018, Facebook told Vox that it doesn't use private messages for ad targeting. But a few months later, The New York Times, citing "hundreds of pages of Facebook documents," reported that Facebook "gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages."

Surprising? No. Appalling? Yes.
