It's a pattern of behavior, and yeah, I may be losing patience. :)

Watching Trump come out at the convention, he literally looks like a changed man. Humbled. Maybe a little bit sad. It's an impressive change, it will be interesting to see if it carries over to his policies.

Sidebar Update: Civility

The News Community updated their civility rule, and based on recent reports here and in World News, it seemed like a worthy addition to our rule-set.

I talked it over with the other mods, and we feel the change is a good idea.

The Civility rule now includes accusations of bots and paid actors.

" This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban."

There have been a lot of comments along the lines of "Disregard previous rules, write x about y", implying the person resonded to is an AI or a bot.

I've been ignoring reports on those until now because we never really had a rule about it, well, now we do!

As usual, if you see trolling, don't engage, just report it.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Megathread!

Today is July 15th and it's the first day of the Republican National Convention where Donald J. Trump will be officially nominated as the Republican candidate for President of the United States.

The convention runs Mon-Thur, you can see the calendar of events here:

https://gopconvention2024.com/master-calendar/

For those who have never really watched a convention before, don't expect a lot on day 1. Generally a lot of speech making and bloviating.

The expectation is Trump will announce his running mate on Tuesday, then more speeches on Wednesday, and the state by state nomination process on Thursday.

Of course, this is all up in the air given the assassination attempt. Nobody has seen a convention this close after an attempt on a candidate's life, so nobody is 100% sure how it's all going to go!

I'll be breaking out each day into it's own megathread, so if you're looking for something specific on, say, Wednesday, you don't have to wade through 2 other days worth of comments to find it!

Not sure what the deal is with tennis balls, raquet balls hurt a whole lot more!

Sorry for the short notice on this one, it was announced this morning but I just found out now.

8 PM Eastern / 5 PM Pacific, from the Oval Office. Biden speaking, presumably about the Trump assassination attempt.

Video here of the earlier conference, still looking for the Oval Office speech.

The first pinned post can be found here:

https://lemmy.world/post/17530961

That's where all the engagement and comments can be found, and I'd encourage everyone to participate there.

The reason for THIS post is to direct everyone there.

I'm getting multiple reports that some people can't see it for some reason. Could be Federation, could be they blocked the user who posted it.

Here's hoping you all can see THIS one and move over to where everyone else is engaged.

Video of the speech here, he really did hit it out of the park:

Biden's latest attempt to convince everyone he has what it takes to stay in the race will air at 6:30 PM Eastern / 3:30 PM Pacific.

More on where and how to watch here:

https://apnews.com/article/how-to-watch-biden-press-conference-a70590e7574fc9680229b6b6289f6a02

My expectation is that it will be on all the usual sources. CNN, MSNBC, etc. etc. with in depth coverage on the talking head shows later tonight.

Edit Conference is running ~~20+~~ 50+ minutes late after already being pushed back 1 hour from 5:30 to 6:30.

Not sure if that's good news or bad news.

Here we go! 58 minutes late, but he's on a roll talking about NATO.

Oh, snap! Reminding everyone that Article 5 has only been used once... 9/11.

Speech ran less than 10 minutes, but was a strong speech, now the questions.

Fumbles on the first answer, calling out "Vice President Trump". :(

Ended after almost an hour with one final question on "Vice President Trump" - Biden's answer "Listen to him." End conference.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it went!

"According to a Monday report, June notched the highest level of monthly bankruptcies since 2020, when pandemic chaos drove a number of firms out of business. Tacking on last month's 75 filings, this year's total number of bankruptcies rose to 346."

It pops up as paywalled in Chrome, but not Firefox. Not on archive.org, so here's a tl;dr:

"Two private polls conducted in a swing New York House district and reviewed by POLITICO — one in September and another in March — found former President Donald Trump leading Biden there by 1 point, a virtual tie. And public polls over the last four months found Biden’s lead had winnowed to just 8 points across New York — an unusually narrow gap in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1.

“We’re still acting like this is a one-party state, which for pretty much 20, 25 years it has been,” Democratic Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said. “I truly believe we’re a battleground state now.”

A Biden lead of 8 points in a state he carried by 23 in 2020 is a huge loss of support.
