MODERATOR OF

Hello everyone,

I'm sad to announce that I've come to the decision that it would be best to archive this instance given the overhead in administration and moderation that would be required to run it correctly.

Please note that this announcement ONLY impacts yiffit.net and that I have no intention of terminating packmates.org at all.

There is several reasons for this decision but most of them are based on my inability to run the instance with the quality and care that I envisioned. Due to the nature of Lemmy, the necessary moderation effort, media storage costs and admin effort are considerably higher than for a Mastodon instance, for example. It's not a matter of donations, which many of you have generously offered over the lifespan of the instance.

What is meant by termination and archival?

Some time after January 3rd 2025, fulfilling my promise of giving at least 3 months notice, the following will happen:

  • Yiffit will stop federating, all user sessions will be revoked and logins will be disabled.
  • The site will effectively become a read-only version, giving access only to local communities. NSFW communities will be accessible publicly without need for an account although equipped with an age disclaimer and anything else necessary to display adult content.
  • Remote communities and posts will no longer be accessible, thus remote instances need not worry that we would somehow cache any content which they would have wanted deleted if federation had been enabled.
  • Local comments and posts from remote users will be preserved.
  • There will be a way to receive and process personal account / data deletion requests for yiffit.net users or remote users who have submitted a comment or post.
  • I will attempt to find a way to have the site officially archived in the Internet Archive or in any similar way.
  • I will continue paying for the domain and hosting for an indeterminate period of time, especially since the storage costs of local content as opposed to remote content are negligible.

Technically there is a chance that we could come back at some point since I'll make sure to save the server's federation authentication keys as well as all local content, but I don't want users to count on it.

If we were to come back it would probably be in a form other than a Lemmy instance or anything else that I currently am aware exists out there.

If you want to post a farewell message, please feel free to send a comment below since everything will be archived and visible. Before archiving the instance, around New Year's Eve I'll create the final farewell message thread. Both this thread and the final farewell message thread will be pinned in the home page when the site is archived.

Thank you everyone for everything. I'm incredibly humbled by all the interest and users we've received over time and especially all the regular users who've kept posting constantly despite the downturn in activity.

Hello, Unfortunately I am not able to take care of Yiffit as it deserves. Unfortunately, having been blocked by lemmy.ml, Yiffit is not a good instance to explore the lemmyverse because it is restricted. At the same time, I feel like there's countles off other sites where Yiff can be found in a better way.

I have closed registrations for the time being as I gather feedback and collect my thoughts.

Thank you and apologies.

Even if it's just an archived version, someone somewhere will find utility in IT or coding advice posted over a century ago.

Damn, if that's the case, how and where can I please surround myself with cybersecurity experts? Please... for security purposes of course.

I think it would be difficult to tag based on context since often we can't know a character's personality, story, beliefs, identity, etc... just what we can see. At least most of the time.

In this case, the terms 'andromorph' and 'gynomorph' literally translates to 'male form' and 'female form', and I believe that it is referring to the physical sex instead of gender, especially since 'form' in this case is alludes to the physical representation of the character.

What I'm trying to say is that the terms 'andro' and 'gyno' refer in this case to the physical sex and are translated as 'male' and 'female'. In this sense it would make sense to use [M*] and [F*] since the original [M] and [F] tags are also related to physical sex instead of gender, since the gender of a character can't be determined by just the character's physical traits. A character with breasts and a vagina might very well be the fursona of a trans male furry and he feels it better represents him because it's closer to his physical appearance.

Wait a second....

Please stand by....

googling

Okay, I think I got it.

Here's the definition for the term 'prime' used in mathematics:

"In mathematics, the prime is generally used to generate more variable names for similar things without resorting to subscripts, with x′ generally meaning something related to (or derived from) x. For example, if a point is represented by the Cartesian coordinates (x, y), then that point rotated, translated or reflected might be represented as (x′, y′). "

Thus the most respectful way of tagging andromorphs and gynomorphs could be [M′] and [F′], since it does indicate that an element such as a function in mathematics is derivated, differentiated but by no means does it indicate that it's inferior in any way. Technically the prime character ′ is it's own character but I think that using apostrophes will suffice.

I would still like to campaign for [G'], [S'] and [L'] because I think it's a way simplify tags when there's 3+ characters. Most of the time when you browse yiff what matters to you is the orientation of the characters / scene, instead of the amount of characters by counting the number of Ms and Fs.

Thus, how about this:

  • [M], [F], [M'], [F'], [I], [A] for solo pictures
  • [M/F], [M/M], [M/F'], etc... for two characters The above categories probably encompass the vast majority of yiff and they're easy to understand. Then we relegate group tags such as [G], [L], [S], [G'], [L'], [S'], [Bi], [Bi'] ONLY for pictures with 3+ characters as an optional representation that can save you from having to write many letters and making searching and filtering easier. (G-L-S-Bi notation would change from being discouraged for pictures with just two characters where two letters can give us full precision at a minor extra cost of a single letter and from now on only encouraged for pictures with 3+ characters)

In this case I realize that some precision is lost, but pictures with 3+ characters aren't the majority, it's optional and it could be tidier in many circumstances where you care about the orientation.

I think we might be getting close to having a solution? What do you think?

Sorry, my mistake. I'm used to posting other nsfw content and clicked the option here out of habit.

Yep. I can totally imagine that reaction :P But who knows, maybe some turn into furries.

If they've been talking to you for 20 minutes while wearing a collar, they're interested.

Tell your instance admin to restart the Lemmy service every so often. We have ours restart every six hours since that fixes the hot thing breaking and getting stale.

Larger instances might not be able to restart often as it could leave some interactions in limbo.

They're lucky they didn't wander into a hospital!

There's currently no way to do this. It's a planned feature though.
