Speaking of the Mouse House, ratings analyst Parrot Analytics tell us that Doctor Who was the most in-demand UK-originating show with U.S. audiences during its early release, although it didn’t have enormous competition in this realm (Bridgerton counts as U.S.-originated while Baby Reindeer had been out for a month by the time Doctor Who launched). It was seventh on Disney+’s list of most in-demand series, Parrot adds, trailing the likes of The Simpsons and the Star Wars offshoots.

Considering its marketing might and budget, a senior U.S. ratings source positions these figures as “underwhelming,” although they acknowledge Doctor Who has long struggled attracting mainstream audiences in the U.S. “Okay but not stellar,” was the simple verdict from a Disney insider about the internal view on its performance.

All eyes now on the upcoming season, which is in the can and due to launch next year, along with a long-rumored set of spin-offs that comprise the new ‘Whoniverse’ including The War Between the Land and the Sea. Fans were delighted when this spin-off was alluded to in the ’73 Yards’ episode of the latest season and Deadline is told that shooting will commence in September.

One of our sources close to the production believes Disney will “need to make a decision” on its future relationship with the show soon after The War Between the Land and the Sea wraps, and this could have a bearing on how long the in-demand Gatwa — who will lead a West End production of The Importance of Being Earnest at the end of this — remains Doctor. Although the next season has wrapped, this source predicts the final episode has been left open-ended, with the possibility remaining open that Gatwa could regenerate into his successor if he chooses to exit. Gatwa’s agents hadn’t responded to Deadline’s request for comment by press time.

So, it sounds like her double-casting won't be part of some season-long mystery:

"It’s one of those very simple situations, like with Freema [Agyeman, who appeared in Army Of Ghosts before being cast as Martha Jones]: when you cast a great actor, you need a new companion...

...I was thinking, 'Should we go back to the 51st century, could we meet her again?' and then I suddenly went, 'Oh, let’s just cast her again. We’ve done that before. Lovely.' The relief that went around the entire production and the BBC, everyone went, 'Oh, great.' It was the most instant 'yes' you’ve ever seen...

...We had a great meeting. She was kind of amazed and delighted. Lovely. Good stuff ahead. Completely new character, again, a completely new story, and that’s a great new story that will run across eight episodes."

“The Breen ship, I believe, is the largest asset we’ve ever built. It was about 10 kilometres of an actual digital environment that were built so we can travel through and also shoot practically in certain areas,” he recalls. “It was a really massive ship both from the exterior but also from the interior. And it’s something that if you look at the details when you’re watching it on screen, there’s just so much depth, Digi doubles and ships – the detail is almost endless.”

Not sure what to say here besides, "wow."

See, I knew I should've paid more attention to what they were saying around "Zee."

It really was good to get a Zero-centric episode.

The Nobodies being reckless thrill-seekers was a nice story element - I always wished Saru had gone through something similar following his vahar'ai.

I think the episode did about as well as could be expected when it comes to conveying the concept of gaining senses for the first time, and then willingly giving them up. Heady stuff for a kids' show.

By the way, did Gwyn refer to Zero as a he in the log?

I had the chance to keep an ear out for this as I watched, and I think the line is, "I think Zee's safe with us until we do." They've used the nickname a handful of times through the season so far, but it's susceptible to unclear pronounciation.

It was a fun twist - it was good to see something that will carry forward from what was otherwise a fairly standard hijinks episode.

It's also good to see Maj'el getting involved in said hijinks like a good Vulcan.

Wow, Tarka was a chatty sonofagun.

Honestly? I think that's probably exactly what they do.

Nostalgia sells, which is why TOS stuff specifically has dominated the merch market for years. And older fans, unfortunately, are probably more likely to have money to burn.

I find merch interesting these days...what do people even want? I feel like action figures are a thing of the past. Are prop and costume replicas where it's at these days?

I wonder if they'll tie that directly in to Lower Decks with a Doctor guest appearance.

If you don't like the content hosted on this instance, why do you have an opinion on this at all?

Dr. Erin is canon!

Well, canon-er, since she got a brief name drop in a Lower Decks episode.

I was briefly concerned that they were treating time travel and quantum realities as the same thing, but I'm glad they addressed them separately in Chapter 15.
