Hmmm... it wouldn't be circular if we had "levels" of slaves. Imagine you only directly enslaved the people in the level below you, and you were only directly enslaved by the people in the level above you. I think it would still end up circular in places, though, so maybe we should call these "classes" instead.

Wait a minute... MyGodIGetItNow.jpg

I don't remember why I have this in my browser history, but I do:

Visigoths vs. Mall Goths is an urban fantasy tabletop role-playing game with LGBTQ dating sim elements by Lucian Kahn, with art by Robin Eisenberg.[1] The ancient Visigoths have time traveled to 1990s Los Angeles and are battling mall goths for control of the mall.[2] The game's tone is silly and the setting has many puns. The game was inspired by 1990s movies The Craft, Empire Records, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Clueless.[2][3]

Players make characters in competing teams of 2-3 Visigoths and 2-3 Mall Goths. Conflicts are resolved by opposed rolls with two six-sided dice plus character class bonuses. Players can use embarrassing traits to offer a teammate a bonus. Characters are not physically hurt in combat but receive hurt feelings they can heal through dialogue.

there’s still the huge question of who’s going to do most of the posting, eventually?

Yeah, that's the tough one. I saw your post, and I think it's a great idea to ask for volunteers and suggesting that they post.

Disinformation has been an active area of research since the Cold War. Yes it is effective, though obviously there are limits. Maybe you can convince people that a celebrity did something even though it's not true, but you can't really convince a particular invididual that they themselves have a different name and history. Here's a good survey of the state of the art circa 2022 (skip to "Findings of qualitative analysis" to see summaries of studies): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10446021/

One time I was travelling through Latin America and we stopped somewhere at a food place by the road. They said: see that huge rock in the field there? One time many years ago there was a circus in town, and everybody in the town went, and it was in that field. But then there was an earthquake, and a mudslide started, and it was wiping everything out. But a clown managed to get a bunch of kids to safety and they huddled on that rock while the mud wiped out everything around them, killing everyone else in the town.

Maybe it was all BS but it was a pretty vivid image. (edit: OMFG I remembered it mostly right.)

Paperwork wins empires,

Ooh! I just thought of something:

  • Paperwork enables logistics
  • Logistics wins battles
  • Battles win empires
  • Therefore, paperwork wins empires. QED.

You're getting downvoted, but eBay enshittified pretty early, around 2003 iirc.

Charming idea, it really is a mood.

I'm sure people have already recommended the 3-issue comic We3 to you, but it also deals with weaponized animals.

btw the "next" links on pages 11 and 12 aren't active.

I think a better summary would be: Chile told Bolivia after Bolivia tried to screw it over on an international treaty, and Bolivia dragged Peru into it. It's an interesting history from many perspectives: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Pacific

On the bright side, they save a lot of money on their Coast Guard.

"Darling he meant nothing to me! He was just a one-hit wonder!"

This movie needs no introduction, so I'm just going to put this here:

Conan the Barbarian is a 1982 American epic sword and sorcery film directed by John Milius and written by Milius and Oliver Stone. Based on Robert E. Howard's Conan, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Earl Jones, and tells the story of a barbarian warrior named Conan (Schwarzenegger) who seeks vengeance for the death of his parents at the hands of Thulsa Doom (Jones), the leader of a snake cult.

I'm trying to improve my Spanish, and came across the Spanish version of Naked Lunch, which is a Cronenberg film about/adapting the book by William S Burroughs. The movie's pretty good, and the soundtrack's excellent. Couldn't find an English version, disculpe!

Naked Lunch es una película canadiense de misterio-fantástica y drama de 1991 escrita y dirigida por David Cronenberg y basada en la novela homónima de William S. Burroughs. Whether or not eXistenZ is cyberpunk or not was previously discussed here.

notes from the original post:

Existenz (stylized as eXistenZ) is a 1999 science fiction horror film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg. The film follows Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a game designer who finds herself targeted by assassins while playing a virtual reality game of her own creation.

I posted this song earlier, but that was before I found this killer cyberpunk AMV made from Battle Angel Alita. (i.e. the anime that served as the source for the "Alita: Battle Angel" movie)

Hey, community guidelines say we can post dailymotion videos here! Good thing too, because this is a good one.

Even if you don't like lawyers, even if you don't like the military, even if you don't like Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore, this movie is still worth watching. That's because the dialogue is solid. Probably because it started out as a play, and therefore doesn't rely on stunts or action or even great cinematography. If you've already seen it, watch it again, and try to see if you can find even one line of dialogue that you could remove, that would make things better. It's tough. Because every line belongs there. That's the truth... even if "you can't handle" it!

The plot follows the court-martial of two U.S. Marines charged with the murder of a fellow Marine and the tribulations of their lawyers as they prepare a case.

Nine Inch Nails had the largest crowd density at the event, overshadowing many of the other performers. Just before going on stage, they wrestled each other in the mud and went on to perform completely wet and covered in mud.[18] In the post-performance interview, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor claimed he thought his band's performance was "terrible" due to technical difficulties on stage.[19] Reznor admitted that while he disliked playing at such a large show, it was done for the money: "To be quite frank, it's basically to offset the cost of the tour we're doing right now."[20] Their performance of "Happiness in Slavery" at the festival won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1996.[21]

This is the 300th post on !gothindustrial@lemmy.world !

Go ahead and downvote... it's OK, I get it...

They've been described as "goth clowns", which is doubtlessly just as offensive to goths as it is to clowns. But I'm pretty sure that's the point. Think of them as shitposters; they're the best shitposters in the business.

This movie explains the human condition with all the candor of a much-upvoted shitpost, and all the beauty of a classical painting. The final scene perfectly depicts our contemporary global situation.

[An] epic historical drama film produced, written and directed by Werner Herzog. Klaus Kinski stars in the title role of Spanish soldier Lope de Aguirre, who leads a group of conquistadores down the Amazon River in South America in search of the legendary city of gold, El Dorado. ... Aguirre opened to widespread critical acclaim, and quickly developed a large international cult film following. It was given an extensive arthouse theatrical release in the United States in 1977, and remains one of the director's best-known films. Several critics have declared the film a masterpiece, and it has appeared on Time magazine's list of "All Time 100 Best Films".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aguirre,_the_Wrath_of_God

FUN FACT: the movie was originally shot with the actors speaking in English, since it was the only language that everyone in the cast knew. But the funds to do the original post-sync were stolen, and they ended up dubbing it again in German.

The film's reputation through the years has continued to grow. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of 50 critics gave the film a positive review, with an average rating of 9/10. The site's critics consensus reads, "A haunting journey of natural wonder and tangible danger, Aguirre transcends epic genre trappings and becomes mythological by its own right."[28]

J. Hoberman has written that Aguirre "is not just a great movie but an essential one ... Herzog's third feature ... is both a landmark film and a magnificent social metaphor".[29] Danny Peary wrote, "To see Aguirre for the first time is to discover a genuine masterpiece. It is overwhelming, spellbinding; at first dreamlike, and then hallucinatory."

Not quite as charming as the first one, but not really terrible either.

Van Damme isn't in this one, but "Ray Jackson" is back, and many of the other actors are somewhat recognizeable from other films. (i.e. the main guy was in a John Wick and a Matrix; the wise sage character does the voice of the noodle selling bird in Kung Fu Panda, etc.) and they are joined by Pat "Mr Miyagi" Morita. Also once they get to the kumite, there are a bunch of different martial artists like kung fu and muay thai fighters, a judoka, a capoeira guy, etc. There's a framing story which is right on the line between cringe and camp, and indeed the seriousness with which you take this movie is inversely proportional to how enjoyable you'll find it. Meaning: turn your brain off and it's pretty fun.

"Allow nothing to be in your life that you cannot walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you spot the heat around the corner." Sounds easy, slick!

One of the best cops-and-robbers films of all time. The bank heist scene is the stuff of legends.

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in their prime. Ensemble cast includes Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, Jon Voight, Natalie Portman, Danny Trejo, and a bunch of others. With cameos by Tone Loc and Henry Rollins!
