The fact that he got away with it once likely made him even more careless.

I would hope that he gets locked away more permanently this time.

Two charges is a pattern that the law will not overlook if he was not exonerated of the first charge already.

It's actually appalling that he did this to the kid; with the mother gone and himself being under criminal suspicion; it's highly likely that it would've been easy for him to have the child adopted by another responsible couple.

Reddit has been going through numerous changes that, generally, it's users dislike.

So there will be waves of people leaving reddit most likely; as they spin away from serving the user; to serving profits.

Privacy is a spectrum. Your privacy needs may vary; depending on your personal situation.

But good first steps are pretty easy.

  • Leave your email accounts at services like GMail, Yahoo, or any other big corporation. Find a privacy respecting provider such as Tuta or ProtonMail.
  • Log into all accounts you have online; switch them over to the new email.
  • Minimize your use of 'Corporate' social media. Delete any accounts you can live without. (Meta/Instagram/Pinterest)
  • For any of the "Social Media" accounts (like Facebook) you choose to KEEP; you must log into them and lock them down, and make sure all the privacy settings are configured to minimize invasive tracking. Repeat this step on a monthly basis.
  • Seek out alternate social media. (Lemmy/Mastodon/Fediverse)
  • Use 2FA. For everything. No Exceptions. This will cut down on problems later if your data gets leaked.
  • Set a unique password for everything, and use a password manager to help you do this! Seriously. Bitwarden is good.
  • Switch messengers. Matrix, Signal and the like are good; but understand you may not be able to get everyone around you to switch, so don't rush this too quickly.

Honestly, there are low-touch/low-fuss distributions that exist that can be installed with some assistance from a more techy person in one's life.

But I will admit that Apple is more usable across the board.

However, not everyone can really afford the extra cost of an Apple system; which genuinely does require re-buying a lot of other devices in order to get basic compatibility.

For some, yes, Apple does solve the problem. For others, Linux can be accessible and easy to use; particularly if hardware being used is older, and the workflows are common enough.

Your argument is irrelevant.

The problem with PPA wasn't anything to do with the method it uses. Given enough announcement, discourse and investigation by the community; it's entirely possible that users in general would have accepted it.

However; Mozilla did something very wrong by deploying this without asking the greater community. Point blank. That's not good faith; and that did not allow for the community to go over the code and suggest fixes and express their concerns with how it works.

Instead Mozilla took the lead and decided it will exist; quietly. Without consulting the community. Given that this is how most companies turn selfish, that alarms MANY people who are knowledgeable about how Mozilla typically operates, and it undermines public trust in Mozilla.

Don’t they, err, already do this?

No, They don't. They have stolen that initial choice from you by paying companies to be the "default" choice. They do this to capture those who are lazy or indolent about their choices, or to entrap those who are too un-savvy to change the preference.

This is why technologies like DoH and DoT are needed. To prevent this kind of tampering.

I have to point out that they have, indeed, given more than 24 hours notice with the letter they posted. DEF CON hasn't started yet and they informed the con organizers to inform the attendees with the rooms.

So this is reasonable.

Is it right? Probably not; and they're probably going to upset a lot of folks. Let's hope they use discretion and only inspect rooms where they believe something unusual is going on.

With all likelihood; it would have been 3 to 5 whole years before anyone could have purchased a localized, legitimate copy of the movie in Lat.Am.

So no; I do not blame them for doing this. Considering that this movie was even broadcast as a "Public Screening" and likely nobody paid anything in admission but for food and drink...I'd even argue this was a 100% non-commercial use. Depending on the laws in Brazil it might even be "fair use" for a city official to do this; as informational and educational arguments can be made for it depending on the audience.
