No, things are moving along though (pictrs upgrade was just completed). Again I'm not going to give a date were going to upgrade at apart from warning before we do so since it won't be followed due to us all being volunteers and things changing due to issues coming up

0.19.4 is annoying since it adds the hashtag additions where posts are auto hashtagged with the community name. I was aiming to Ideally remove that from the codebase before we upgrade but we might have to upgrade with that in it

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 18 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

That would massively hinder growth since actual users would get affected and then leave since they can't actually use the platform

Probably better to set up some link blacklists and then add things to it based on what spammers are linking to

edit: what you linked to is also not a community, did you mean !technology@lemmy.world or !tech@programming.dev?

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago

pictrs is still upgrading but I believe its mostly usable atm

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 6 points 5 months ago

pict-rs is the image service yeah

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Yeah I recently made it so that I can start building up an alternative to unixporn@lemmy.ml. Did the same for a couple other lemmy.ml communities that fit within the instance due to some recent lemmy.ml related threads

There probably will be a bunch of crossposts from the other ones until it gets large enough to have its own posts and im also going to cross post some stuff using my non admin account in the future. Encouraging some other users to cross post as well

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

The links to the other posts show up below in a cross-posted to section so you can still access it if you want. The limitation on it needing to be the same page comes from this handling happening on the frontend instead of the backend. Ideally imo backend should handle it like how it handles the cross-posts displayed when looking at the post itself

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 4 points 5 months ago (3 children)

On lemmy-ui if both posts are both "visible" in the feed they will be compacted into one post if they share the same link meaning there wont be a duplicate post (unless you paginate and theyre on different pages)

Some other frontends such as sync dont do this though but they really should

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

If a community is shown with proper data its working and probably hidden (the one thats broken, nytimes, doesnt have correct data since its missing the stats and mod list)

But yeah lemmy has terrible UX for hidden communities atm

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (3 children)

Yeah, I go through and hide things every once in awhile by looking though communities in the database with some queries

BBC is hidden since i just went though and hid them. Sub and youll see all the posts. Hackaday isnt fetching posts looks like (did anyone sub previously?)

The last one should be scientificamerican instead of scientificamerica and seems to be functioning but hidden so sub and youll see the posts

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (5 children)

Federation seems to be working, just that one specific community broke for some reason

All these communities fall under the realm of things I hide from the main feeds though since its majority bot content so at some point youll have to subscribe to see the posts

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 6 points 5 months ago

Should be posting these daily for awhile

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

There was one open a bit ago but its now closed. tldr the swap to Bun from node broke things on some operating systems

I collected together all of the templates I could find for different groups (originally did this to see where I can expand the programming.dev template out to but figured other people might be interested so they can see where there wont be as much conflict for space

Most of these are from the group finder thread. Some may be a pixel off but I tried to get things as close as possible (some of these are recreated since I couldnt get the source image from imgur or the source image is larger and was shrunk for the canvas with me not being able to replicate the shrink behaviour)

The factions included in here are:

  • Australia
  • Bronies
  • Osu
  • New Zealand
  • Blahaj.Zone
  • Programming.Dev
  • Toast.ooo
  • SquaredCircle
  • Arecibo message
  • Touhou
  • SCP
  • jlai.lu
  • Anarchy chess
  • Perchance
  • Feddit.org

Ill try to do an updated post if needed with additional factions that post their templates close to when the event starts

And if theres anyone who wants to join up with the programming.dev template if youre tech related or if you want to ally feel free to reach out (you can find our groups in the group finder thread)

edit: moved SquaredCircle since they moved to not overlap with Osu

edit 2: added Lilou41's template

edit 3: updated osu and bronies to be more recent art

edit 4: added Lvxferre's template

edit 5: added touhou hijack

edit 6: added jlai lu

edit 7: added scp

edit 8: added godot and ategondev

edit 9: added anarchy chess, perchance, and feddit

edit 10: added another aus template

edit 11: fixed aus size

edit 12: moved triangle position

edit 13: added dolls now and paf

edit 14: updated toast art

Canvas is happening in almost a day! This is an event similar to to r/place where everyone can place a pixel on a canvas every so often. Everyone has access to the same canvas meaning you can work together to construct art and wars can happen for territory leading to needing to defend things that get constructed

The event link is here: https://canvas.fediverse.events

This is the second time the event is taking place. Ive attached an image of what our area looked like the first time it happened.

Last time canvas took place it was limited to only lemmy users due to limitations in the log in system. This time however its open to all fediverse users so there will probably be a lot more competition for space

The main locations for dicussing the event for programming.dev is this community, our discord and our matrix if you want to chat with other people participating

Theres a design that will be getting made for programming.dev in general but if any communities want to organize something feel free to plan out something nearby or elsewhere on the canvas. Any help getting the programming.dev design built will also be really appreciated since then we will be able to expand out the design and get more communities represented in the community icons

You can use this template to know where to place pixels for the programming.dev design when the event is happening

One to one: https://canvas.fediverse.events/#x=394&y=489&zoom=2&tu=https%3A%2F%2Fbytes.programming.dev%2Ffiles%2F6f673823-4fce-4fc0-8b92-8c2fda30469f&tw=500&tx=0&ty=0&ts=ONE_TO_ONE

Dotted: https://canvas.fediverse.events/#x=394&y=489&zoom=2&tu=https%3A%2F%2Fbytes.programming.dev%2Ffiles%2F6f673823-4fce-4fc0-8b92-8c2fda30469f&tw=500&tx=0&ty=0&ts=DOTTED_BIG

edit: added c/godot and toast.ooo to the template

This design may get updated as the event goes on so check for any updates every so often so you dont erase work

Ill be active over in the event channel in discord & matrix (theyre bridged to each other) and will be posting some announcements in this community. Feel free to make posts relating to the event in here

We now have a new alternate frontend for our instance, Tesseract!

Tesseract is a fork of Photon with some differences displayed on the project's GitHub page.

The overall main features being:

  • Full Media Support in Feed and Posts
  • Community Browser / Enhanced Discovery
  • Media Bias Fact Check (MBFC) Integration
  • Fediseer Integration
  • Distinguished and Sticky Comments
  • Keyword Filtering
  • Multiple Account Support
  • Improved Moderation Tools

You can find the Tesseract frontend at https://t.programming.dev

Along with this, Photon is currently only semi-supported as opposed to being one of our main Alternate Frontends. Due to a recent swap in Photon's tooling we are unable to update to later versions of Photon. As such, for now the alternate frontend will exist frozen and will continue to exist in the future until either: a new lemmy version breaks that version of the frontend or the issues are fixed and upgrading becomes possible again.

I made some updates to the post system in stacks.programming.dev to make it a bit more organized. Categories will now be only the main sites and posts will be filtered into what categories they fit best in. Previously each subdomain has its own category.

The main change for this would be that things like alternate frontends will be under the Programming.Dev category instead of their own (but they still have a tag for people who want to filter by only that subdomain)

Ive also cleaned up the posts to organize them better in the source code by appending the date they were made in front of each ones file name and ive added some more tags (such as an Alternate Frontend tag)

Hey everyone! Theres an event upcoming for the fediverse in 1 week (you can see the countdown from this site: https://canvas.fediverse.events/). This is an event similar to place and ran by the toast.ooo instance

Everyone has access to a shared pixel art canvas and can place a new pixel every so often! Pixels placed onto the map color that pixel the color you choose which every person then sees. People often coordinate with things like templates to get art of different things onto the map.

An example of canvas

Last year we participated and managed to get a pretty big zone for programming.dev. This year however will have much more participants than last year so need more support and help constructing our area. I'll be attempting to establish a technology zone on the canvas so if theres any instances or communities that have to do something with technology and want to do something feel free to reach out and we can help each other.

Programming.Dev's area in last years canvas

If you're interested in joining the event theres three locations we will be talking. Theres event channels on the discord and matrix (that are bridged to each other). We also have an event community at https://programming.dev/c/events which most canvas posts will go in from now on. Hope to see you all there!

If you want to organize a section of the canvas for your community (e.g. c/godot) you can request a channel for your community on the discord and matrix which will help you organize better. Feel free to reach out to me (Ategon).

If you want to help out the instance itself make sure to join the locations and things will be announced for updates. If you want to help organize things (organizing the instance for the event) feel free to reach out so I can get people to lead the pixel placing for things like when I'm sleeping.

The current design for this year

Should start making some more blog posts on stacks as I come back to be active in the instance again. Took a large-ish break to focus on some game dev and now back to power through things.

After the federation issues the instance had earlier this week (for context see last meta post) its been taking a bit to catch up with all instances fully. Every instance apart from world should have federation fully functional in both directions now.

Federation from our instance to world is also working (so they can see posts the instance makes). Federation from world to our instance is 18 hours behind so we currently don't get posts as they are made (seems some recent comments are coming through for some reason though). This will slowly automatically get fixed over time (probably within a day) and is just due to lemmy.world being big and generating activities quickly enough to keep adding things to the queue of activities while the instance tries to catch up

In other news I'm coming back from taking a break from the instance for awhile and should be making some more posts soon for things like canvas that are coming up as well as some other stuff in my backlog so expect a couple more meta posts today

Bullet heaven type game (similar to vampire suvivors for people whove never heard that genre name before) where you need fight alongside animal companions against hordes of yokai

The theme of the jam was Folklore so we ended up tying it in different ways to Japanese folklore (including basing some of the concept of the game off of Kintaro)

Hope you enjoy :)

The soundtrack is also available to listen to on another itch page https://team-auboreal.itch.io/the-legend-of-akio-ost

Share some progress, text or screenshots of some development on your game!

Information

Casette Beasts is a game made in Godot by Bytten Studio and published by Raw Fury. Joel Baylis is the composer for the soundtrack while Shelby Harvey did the vocals. The studio is primarily based out of the UK with their publisher being based in Sweden.

Its a creature collector where monsters are recorded to tapes and then you can take on their form or combine two forms together to use in turn based combat.

Your Inception is a bonus track that appears when fighting a secret boss in the game added in as a reference to Bytten Studio's previous game, Lenna's Inception.

Lyrics

Here you are
Faced with a text of blood
An honest chip on your shoulder
Won’t make a soldier
Out of anyone

Golden or draped in black
It takes just a splinter in the right frame of mind
To break all obstacles you might find

Can’t you
Feel your true calling
It’s endlessly falling
Driving you here
Despite your repentance
And best intentions
Nothing to fear
You’ll figure it ou-ou-ou-out

Now let’s jump into the mix
It feels tectonic
Can you hear the shift

Are you craving acceptance
Now your inception’s
Finally here
You’ll figure it ou-ou-ou-out

If you learn to loosen your mind
You never know what you might find 'round here
The box looks smaller from the outside

Holes that they made will cave in
A dream of filling boots too big
In time you’ll see
How brave that you need to be

Can’t you
Feel your true calling
It’s endlessly falling
Driving you here
Despite your repentance
And best intentions
Nothing to fear
You’ll figure it ou-ou-ou-out

Now let’s jump into the mix
It feels tectonic
Can you hear the shift

Are you craving acceptance
Now your inception’s
Finally here
You’ll figure it ou-ou-ou-out

Silent sirens airing
Tremors causing cracks in the crown
They will never rest 'til
All that’s left are roots in the ground

Don’t you look so doubtful
All will be alright in the end
If you play your cards right
Keeping your hand close to your chest

Don’t you
Feel yourself crawling
No longer stalling
Destiny’s here

Time to find a new groove
Polish your best moves
And turn up this song
You’re leaving it all out to dry now

Stand out amongst it all
The quicker you get up
The harder they fall

Face the acceptance
Now your inception’s
Finally here
You’re figuring it ou-ou-out

GSC - Finals (polls.programming.dev)
submitted 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) by Ategon@programming.dev to c/events@programming.dev

Were up to the finals for selecting our song for the lemmyvision contest!

Voting link: https://polls.programming.dev/oZyK

Playlist of songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjeTwn9uA3Y&list=PLJypTpbGxbEofp6tiOHO8hr48sL106ThK

What is Lemmyvision

Lemmyvision is a competition with different countries/communities each deciding on one song to send to the contest and then people will be able to vote for which one is their favorite. The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists.

We are participating as an opportunity to showcase new advancements in the game development space, especially for indie games that might otherwise not get much exposure

Ive been nicknaming our team Team Antarctica but that might be the team name or might not be

How will voting work?

We have two semifinals each with 4 songs. You have the opportunity to vote for a favorite and then a second favorite in each semifinal with voting happening based on ranked choice where if your first choice doesnt get enough votes, the vote goes to your second choice instead. Top two of each semifinal are brought into the finals for a final round of voting
