Crucially to manufacture in Italy.

On the surface, seems a reasonable offer? Italy sells the rights to the name of an Italian brand on the condition the vehicles are manufactured in Italy.

Regardless of it being china or anywhere else

I think so. Then Italian unions can ensure it's doesn't become a slave shop.

Didn't they just find out all these luxury brands were operating what were pretty much sweatshops in Italy recently?

Yes. This is why it doesn't work without unions. Without them it's a varying degrees of slave shop. Is Meloni interested in that, I don't know. Haven't read on her stance on unions.

This is the work of Italy's current right-wing government. Italy also is a member of the Belt and Road initiative and we know they have agreements with China to allow surveillance of Chinese expats by Chinese police officers.

I'm betting unions are anathema.
