Obviously you got it wrong, they were larger. You see, technology was pretty bad back then so they evolved to be taller to hold their phones higher - otherwise they would get no signal. Kinda like giraffes. With stronger signals, we got smaller once again to conserve energy.

Neanderthal refers to the German Neander Tal region, where Tal in German means wally. So the literal translation is Neander-Idiot, because they were too stupid to not be killed by hoomans
