That's not a headline. That's like the science community releasing a headline that Earth has been confirmed to be an oxygen rich environment.

[–] Kelly@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

The source the Tweektown article is quoting also says:

Anticipation is so high that some competing game publishers are waiting as long as possible to commit to their release dates for the fall, according to people familiar with their deliberations who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly. The publishers want to see whether GTA 6 will make its deadline or slip into 2026, these people say, and they’re determined to keep their own games far, far away.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-09/-gta-6-release-date-will-decide-much-of-the-2025-game-calendar

This is probably more interesting, that some upcoming games which don't have release dates may be waiting for this before they commit to a schedule is somewhat noteworthy.

Confirming obvious things is still important. Everyone knows a PS6 will exist but it’ll be huge news when it’s official

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

this is not huge news.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Well technically we've had it confirmed all the way up to the PS9. Which presumably will release alongside somehow the Xbox X because Microsoft can't name a product to save their life

[–] OrgunDonor@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

To me this is more like, the playstation 6 will have online connectivity.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 59 points 2 weeks ago

Oh joy. What an important cultural contribution that will be.

I'm fucking done with Rockstar after GTA5. Took a great franchise and fucking ruined it with online mode. One of my first sessions ended up with a hacker teleporting everyone to a single location on the map and dropping millions on everyone.

Also, I can't play Vice City (still my favorite) on PC without the Social Club bullshit or downloading a cracked version (I gave up on pirated software), despite it being a single player game. Just another company I'm happy to boycott forever.

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You should try playing Vice City on a PS2 emulator. Connect your emulator with retroachievements.org and try to get all the achievements. If you can find a legit PS2 copy, it won't be piracy.

[–] gnomesaiyan@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

That's a good wisdom! I still have my original PS2 disc packed away, but I'd have to get a DVD drive for my PC (I haven't had one for years). They're cheap enough, and I've got a few other games as well. Thanks!

[–] reseller_pledge609@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

If you've got a legit copy then just download a copy and run that on the emulator, no DVD drive needed.

It's not piracy, it's a backup.

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago

Just download an image if you have a legit copy.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I only ever bought RDR2 from them, which is still bringing me a lot of enjoyment, and after seeing how they squandered RDR online for the heinous crime of not printing money fast enough, I don't think I'll be buying anything from them for the foreseeable future.

[–] granolabar@kbin.melroy.org 8 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah the connection check is idiotic. Won't be buying

I bet it won't be as good, you can't have proper satire under the current censorship schemes ran by the owner class.

Esp in light of recent events, parasites will be insecure for a long time

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 2 weeks ago

That's my big problem with the online mode as well. They could have actually made it fun but it's totally unplayable because they don't do anything about hackers while at the same time even by legitimate means giving players access to fucking sci-fi death machines.

I'm so sick of spawning in and instantly getting blown up by a flying motorcycle with infinite rockets. That's not even fun gameplay for the person the flying motorcycle.

[–] oxideseven@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

Oh good this is here, I don't have to post it.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 28 points 2 weeks ago

We all figured that. The question is will there be any additional single player content.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Will the netcode be as crappy as in the original GTA Online? Sources say yes.

[–] proti@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

GTA Online was/is peer to peer. Imagine a world where they chose to have dedicated lobby servers...

[–] deranger@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

When you say peer to peer, does this mean every player communicates with every other player, or does one person act as the “server”?

[–] Ghoelian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I believe one person acts as the host. That's why sometimes it'll kick you out of a session and start loading again, that means the host has left and someone else needs to take over.

[–] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The only reason they even doing more than an online mode at this point is cause they might lose out on a couple of greens otherwise

[–] 60fpsrefugee@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think so personally. Without a story campaign, there is just not enough force to push the launch sales. I think that's why since Black ops 4, all cod has a campaign.

Just hope they don't make the campaign need online connection too, lol. Rockstar launcher is shit enough as it is.

[–] Blackout@fedia.io 17 points 2 weeks ago

GTA 6 will be the last one this century.

[–] a4ng3l@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

How sad is it when gaming companies first advertise to their shareholders before the gamers…

[–] 60fpsrefugee@lemm.ee 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Hate it or love it, GTA has become one of the world biggest brand. GTA6 might be one of the biggest mainstream game. And you just don't make the biggest game without the biggest parachute to get every share holders on-board.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago
[–] LaserTurboShark69@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

This is depressing. RDR2 is one of the pinnacle achievements in gaming and it seems like it might be the last of its kind.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Lemme guess: microtransactions next?

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 weeks ago

As well as macro

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago

So sad that Rockstar now too is "one of those", but that is what always happens when small companies making great products grown into large corporations. Gta6 will be shit, it will ring in the end for Rockstar and nobody at the exec level at Rockstar willl care because they will have filled their pockets and can jump ship.

[–] Sea_Foam_Green@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Anyone who bought a shark card here is to blame

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

GTA 5 was so lame for me already (I just can't relate to predefined characters, especially when they're THIS unlikable) and GTA Online ruined the rest of it for me. Now that they decided to also block Linux I'm seriously questioning why I should even bother with GTA 6 at all? Or this company in general? There's enough games out there I can buy for that money that can keep me busy for longer and with less annoyances.

[–] Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Blocking Linux on GTA V was a huge point for me to avoid GTA6, at least for a while after launch.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago

Oh well I'm definitely going to get the game then. I was concerned that it wouldn't be maximally profitable for shareholders.

I don't need to know anything about the gameplay just that someone who isn't me will make a lot of money out of this.
