Warning! Spoiler markup currently does not work on the Jerboa or Mlem apps. Spoiler text will be plainly visible when viewing from these apps.

Any comments with spoilers outside the scope of the book mentioned in the title, or books preceding it in a series should be tagged. Lemmy's spoiler formatting for post bodies and comments is:

Trying to drum up discussion as others have mentioned. Full spoilers.

Which of the 16 Shards of Adonalsium would you pick, had you been present at the shattering? Or be able to Connect to well enough to pick up? Would you try to modify its intent in any way, a la Harmony/Discord?

That's a really interesting question, and it brings up another one. How did each Vessel decide which one to take? I don't know if I could devote millennia to a single Intent. As we've seen in the books, holding a Shard takes a toll on the Vessels. In Secret History, we can really see how far gone Preservation was by the end of his life. Honor was in a similar state near the end of his life, and we haven't even seen very much of that point in Roshar's history. It's been shown that when someone holds a Shard, it slowly consumes them until the Intent takes control. I'm curious to see how Sazed handles both Ruin and Preservation. It's been hinted that sometime in the future of Mistborn, Harmony will turn to Discord as Sazed faces the internal struggle of holding two shards with seemingly opposite Intents.

I guess this is just a long way of saying I don't know which Shard I would want, and that I probably wouldn't want to take any of them.

A fair argument. It seems like that's exactly what Hoid did, decided not to settle on any single intent. How the original 16 picked their shards is open to interpretation I guess, but I'm pretty sure there's mention in Harmony's letter to Hoid that Ati specifically picked Ruin to try and curb its destructive intent. Conversely, its mentioned that Rayse wanted Odium, and was already a dangerous man.

I wonder, with that info, if the 16 had any idea how badly the Shards would corrupt their vessel.
