Heck yeah. You might find this interesting: there are still are some really good mods out for the game. You can do things like up-res textures, add new playable content, and a lot more. I've had a blast tinkering with it in the past.

Oh yeah I use the Freelancer HD Edition, it makes playing it under Linux really comfortable :)
